This color photograph shows two birds in profile, facing right, as they perch in a lush bush full of thin green leaves against a cream background. The harsh sunlight coming from almost directly overhead has cast a shadow across their faces that makes them both look like they are frowning or angry. The larger bird, a starling, sits closer to the top of the frame and slightly to the right. Due to the starling's dark, grey-brown plumage on the head and dark beak color, she would be presumed to be a juvenile, but I'm not an expert. The rest of her plumage is dark, with iridescent green highlights, and the characteristic V-shaped white speckles on her breast. Below the starling and more to the left of the frame, a smaller male sparrow perches on a thin branch, his body partially concealed by the green leaves of the bush. He has a mid-tone grey conical beak. His head is that same shade of grey, although it is broken up by a stripe of dark brown plumage around his eyes that lightens to red-brown and continues down his back. Under his beak is a patch of black feathers called a bib. His wings are a deep red-brown highlighted by white and both lighter and darker shades of brown. His breast is the same medium-toned grey as his head.
