So many Ruddy Turnstones (Arenaria interpres) around this fall migration. Much more than usual, although still uncommon. Probably because so much habitat on the larger lakes and rivers, a consequence of the extended drought during the summer. #BirdingHungary #waders #shorebirds #FallMigration2026
Most of the small #plovers around right now are Common Ringed Plovers. Little Ringed Plovers (Charadrius dubius) - like this one - are getting scarce. This is the only one I've seen in weeks. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #BirdsSeenIn2026
Short vid of last weekend's mystery Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa). Bigger and taller than the Bar-tailed Godwit but not the biggest of the 4 godwit species. That distinction belongs to the Marbled Godwit. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #godwits
Phonescope image of the Polish ringed Black-tailed Godwit from the weekend. The nerve of this bird... running around with no ID. 👮 🚔 😂 Check out that crazy beak. Impossible to preen its neck unless it gets another godwit to do it. 😀 #BirdingHungary #godwits #WaderWednesday #shorebirds #waders
A big bad Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius). Not the easiest photo subject but I got lucky with this one when it struck a pose just long enough. 😀👍 #BirdingHungary #woodpeckers #WoodpeckerWednesday #BirdsSeenIn2026 #BigBlackBirds
A whole bunch of Spotted Redshanks (Tringa erythropus) went thru in July but since then they have been a bit scarce. This is the first one I've seen in many weeks. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenIn2026 #shorebirds #waders #WaderWednesday #sandpipers
The big bruiser of the harrier clan.... ♀️ Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus). Bigger, stockier and heavier than any other harrier species. The hillsides of Badacsony in the background. 😀 #BirdingHungary #raptors #BirdsOfPrey #hawks #harriers
Polish color-ringed Black-tailed Godwit. Couldn't get details because there was no designation. Odd. Usually you can tell if the flag has been soiled, but this black flag was a consistent uniform black on both sides with no numbers, not even partial. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #godwits #waders
In a minute I went from one of the biggest birds (ie: Great Bustard) to one of the tiniest.. Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus). I heard them calling by the roadside so I just leaned out the jeep window and started "pishing". Sure enough, they came by to check me out. 😀👍 #BirdingHungary #tits
Another great bird from today.. Great Bustard (Otis tarda). One of a dozen I saw today. #BirdingHungary #bustards #bigbirds
Decided to take a break from the #shorebirds and see what I could find out on the puszta. Like this Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) 😀 #BirdingHungary #wheatears #BirdsSeenIn2026
Dunlin checking out a plane in overflight. To them it's probably just a big, noisy raptor. The Dunlin were probing the mud for food, ignoring the thousands of midges on the surface of the water. They left the midges to the Wood Sandpipers. 😀 #BirdingHungary #waders #shorebirds #sandpipers
Juvenile male Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) #BirdingHungary #tits
And here's a Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) searching for those little froggies and fishies. #BirdingHungary #waders #egrets #herons
Short video of Common Snipe. It's interesting to see how much flexibility they have in the upper beak. I've seen godwits do this too. #BirdingHungary #snipe #shorebird #waders
A Common Snipey-snipe 😄 (Gallinago gallinago). This was with my phone thru my telescope so I was bit surprised. Phonescope photos are almost always crap. This one turned out okay. #BirdingHungary #shorebirds #waders #snipe #BirdsSeenIn2026
Short video of Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola). During migration, it's the commonest Tringa species around here. #BirdingHungary #sandpipers #waders #shorebirds
Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) from yesterday. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenIn2026 #sandpipers #waders #shorebirds
One more from today's shorebird smorgasbord... Red Knot (Calidris canutus). Also an uncommon passage bird in Hungary but this year there is more around than usual. #BirdingHungary #waders #shorebirds #sandpipers #WaderWednesday #BirdsSeenIn2026
