Day 10 of #30dhs2k26: 144/100

Not where I expected to take this prompt, honestly. But it came pouring out of me. I'll let the piece speak for itself this time.

There's an ache for you, burning deep in my heart. Buried there behind snuffed out memories and painful reminders. It longs to be there with you, to call your presence home once more. But I know it cannot be, for I have burned more than one bridge on this path to you. I do not deserve this longing, you do not deserve my burden - yet the ache carries through, whispers of what a selfish and hurtful me squandered.

They say that time heals wounds, but I know if I was there they'd rip open anew. For this ache is forever unwanted by us both - a fester that doesn't deserve the pain it inflicts on us both. I am too much, and you deserve so much better. Please don't think of me, let me be the one to carry this ache alone.

Day Nine of #30dhs2k26: (155/100)

Short only because I'm getting ill *again*! Just some character introspection. Giving my namesake my "I'll just do it all myself" trait, but he's got more trust issues than me.

Ethan wasn't the kind of person to ask for help - he was more the “suffer in silence” type. Didn't matter how bad it got or what it was, he'd take it onto himself. He had found out too quickly in his youth that there weren’t many people you could trust in this world except yourself. Friends who’d get him in trouble to save themselves, authority figures would turn a blind eye to make less work, even his own mother would put him in a bad spot if it meant she could get what she wanted. Help wasn’t an option.

So he learned to move in this world without it. Kept people at arms length, sussed out their motives before ever letting them get close. And if there was a struggle? Well he’d deal with it. One way or another.

He never thought it was the best way to live after all, just the necessary one.

Day Eight of #30dhs2k26: 304/200

I actually had a dream about infections last night and that's how this prompt was inspired. This is actually not really spoilers for my players this time! They know this already : ) And about to learn more, so the perfect piece to put me in the mood!

It was said to be a siren’s song, a thought in your head you couldn’t get out. It would latch on, override, and command you - making you feel all the sweeter for giving in. Syrus had witnessed it first hand - well not that kind of first hand - but the glassy, glazed over eyes of an infected victim as they heard it for the first time. Zombie movies didn’t do the description justice: there was something so unnatural about the way they moved, like their whole body craved to turn towards that voice. And then, in a flash, they were normal again.

Syrus was pretty sure he never wanted to hear it. Other agents would boast that they would have the willpower to overcome it, but Syrus knew that willpower wasn’t enough. It wasn’t a passing thought or fancy, it hijacked the primal parts of the brain. That wasn’t something some beefy agent could muscle his way out of, you either gave in or got shot. Syrus wasn’t too keen on getting shot.

But missions like this were getting way more common. Someone in the Phenomenons department theorised that it was an infection of the earth - too many people striping away the life energy of the planet to perform magick. Too much and too fast. And with the fact that it was speeding up meant that the planet did not have enough time to recover back to a balanced state. Someone in Cursebreakers thought maybe part of the planet had been infected and any open wounds magick made was causing it to come through. A few Field Agents decided people could summon it or inflict it, that it was a kind of thing to be controlled. But no matter what theory was true the issue remained:

No one knew how to deal with the Rot.

Day Six of #30dhs2k26: 243/100

I started with a different idea but was inspired by a few other writers in the thread to use the prompt in multiple context to tell one story. And my namesake was the perfect way to do this. He was in a lot of pieces from last year so someone might remember him!

At first, being close to humans was agony; Ethan could hear every intake of breath, every beat of their heart, every blink of their eyes. It was like his nerves had shot up to a constant eleven and everything was on fire. The only thing his mind could do was beg it to stop, the only thing his body wanted to do was sink fangs into the rich sweetness of the nearest sack of meat.

Time didn’t make it easier, just more bearable. He learned how to let the drone of heartbeats fade into the background, to let his mind focus on more than just the constant state of hunger. He wore headphones when he had to go into public and bit more than a reasonable amount of holes into the collars of his shirts and jackets, but it was manageable. The weird looks would be well worth them living, he figured.

Then there was him. For once the deep and cloying scent of a human was not just a constant reminder of hunger, but also a moment of feeling alive. His pulse might have been tempting, but it also was exhilarating - a reminder that they may be things to live (or undead?) for after all. A comforting scent of love and serenity.

And when the sheets no longer smelled like him, when the memory faded into the drab, colourless world of nothingness once more - Ethan vowed he’d never go near humans again.
