You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while.

Why?

Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year.

Bumblebee queens sit on their eggs to keep them warm.

To generate the body heat needed for this they will make up to 6000 flower visits per day to collect nectar.

Half this time is spent as a larva feeding and half as a pupa in a cocoon.

Unlike male bumblebees female bumblebees develop from fertilised eggs.
Early in the life of the nest the females produced are workers.
It is only later in the summer that new queens are produced.

Chilly and damp day today in #VT! I thought this chonker was a goner - it was laying lifeless in my driveway. When I picked it up… it was just waiting for a lift to get to the flowers. #Bumblebees #MacroMonday #Asters #BloomScrolling #ColorADay #PinkMon #Invertebrates #BugSky
