#MinCup26 Round 1 Match 6

New kid is cool and all but I do think SiO2 deserves a shot at a title after all these years 👀

Team #Quartz 💙

@mineralcup.bsky.socialSep 6, 2026, 2:19 PM

It’s a tight #MinCup26 match with just 40 votes separating our contenders and 9 hours left on the clock.

Are you supporting #quartz, a key mineral of childhood (and many adulthood) rock collections, or #asagiite, a newly-discovered oddity hiding in mineshafts?

@erikstrub.bsky.socialSep 6, 2026, 12:56 PM

And, almost forgot, the amethyst color is of course due to charge-transfer effects.

So inorg chemistry, applied chem (silica fuse), solid state physics, nuclear physics, geology, cristallography, mathematics, you could almost think quartz is the holy grail of polymathy. #mincup

#Quartz is still behind #Asagiite! After ten years and with all these beautiful colors it deserves at least the quarter finals! Vote #quartz!

Tweezers for scale. Polished quartz samples are arranged in a line with white and clear samples at one end, violet, yellow, and red in the middle and brown and grey ones at the other end.

An oldie, but a goodie! Vote #quartz. It’s shockingly amazing!

Nice colour asagiite, but it’s no contest. Team #Quartz all the way!

Quartz gets my physics vote as 20% of the Earth’s crust & representative typical elastic moduli, piezoelectricity & its role in clocks, electronics, GPS, computers!

Quartz get art vote for carvings, jewelry & pigments #MinCup26

My mini linocut with quartz crystals and word “Quartz” in script in slate grey. Some of the facets of the crystals are printed onto collaged iridescent translucent paper so they have a pink to pale blue sheen.Rembrandt, Portrait of Margaretha de Geer

The pigment analysis revealed a palette consisting of red, orange, and yellow ochres, smalt, bone black, lead white, and carmine cochineal lake.

This is a portrait of an older woman dressed in black with a large lace collar, seated in a substantial chair, holding a handkerchief and looking directly at the viewer, against a dark background.

Several pigments have varying amounts of quartz content, but smalt, a pigment with a long history often used, for instance, by Rembrandt is prepared by heating quartz sand, potassium carbonate and a small amount of cobalt (II,III) oxide (Co3O4).

How can #quartz be losing to this nobody in round one? Ice, okay, that one I understood, but we at least deserve the angst of quartz v. calcite!

Well somebody had to do it. Don’t let baby Yoda down. Vote #quartz!

Common #Quartz can accommodate other minerals, like #Rutile - resulting in variety called "rutilated quartz".

Here are some examples from Brazil and Austrian Alps:
