Lastak has spent a lot of time on ships, due to spending the last two or so years of her life island hopping. Even now, she lives in a coastal harbour city, though somewhat inland.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Tell me a bit about how your characters interact with the ocean. Have they ever seen it? Ever been on a boat? Do they live near it? Or maybe even IN it? 👀
#SeptemberWorldbuilders Tides in the World Beneath the Arch are actually simpler than ours—there's no moon, so there's only solar tides.
The ocean is well explored and mostly safe, but the waters in the far south are pretty rough. There's an Aulmish phrase that means "danger mixed with opportunity."
#SeptemberWorldbuilders The Inamese believe that the Sea-Father and Earth-Mother divorced years ago, but take it in turns to feed the people.
Inám has a multi-year cycle of moderate rain/bad fishing and drought/good fishing, because of an oscillation in sea surface temperature.
The oceans are not fully discovered, as they are sacred to some (the Drowned Path) and Thessan is pre-industrial exploration is limited in what can be done. The water itself behaves much like our own, with unexplained sunken ships, and surprising survivors.

The ocean of the Nequinum world gets explored in an Odyssey voyage sort of way
Even underwater gets explored with its kelp forests, grottoes, undersea cities, & sunken ships.
There's still much of the Central Sea that hasn't been explored. Because of that, there's quite a few islands hidden within the Central's heart, trapped behind the near-constant storms ravaging it.
As to whether they're inhabited, well...who knows? 😁
Its bottom is filled with the ruins of centuries-old ships.

No one has actually delved super deep into Theryl's oceans. This is partly because they lack the diving equipment necessary, and partly because many would consider it heretical to do so. After all, Ure herself dances in the depths of the sea, and who would intrude upon her?
#SeptemberWorldbuilders 19: While the Southern and Western Oceans are safe for travel, their gyres and everstorms charted, the Great Ocean is almost completely unknown. It's little surprise contact was lost with the peoples of the Far Kingdoms centuries ago.
#SeptemberWorldbuilders 19: Astromancers and theologians agree: there was once a time before Luna Minore orbited our world. Our modern tides pale in comparison to the chaos mariners and coastal civilizations must have experienced as the sun's second consort arrived in orbit.

The water is magically supercharged, which can mutate anything swimming in it into a monster, or sometimes let monsters in from adjacent dimensions. People who fall overboard might also get mutated if unlucky. The tides are pretty regular, though.
Day 18. Myth or legend about the ocean.
That mermaids and sirens swim in the same water. They don't.

The civilization living near the ocean aren't big seafarers, so the ocean to the west isn't fully explored at all! Luckily, a very industrious dwarf takes it upon himself to check what's beyond that horizon. He doesn't like what he finds.

AElit is isolated and the inhabitants have not gone very far into the ocean. They are not explorers and are satisfied with where they are. But when Jonathan Engleman finds them... A new interest in the idea of a larger world takes root.
#SeptemberWorldbuilders Celesta's year is just over 438 Celestan days (438.245 days to be exact), so 14 Celestan months just about line up with their SOLAR year.
TIDES (at peak) are stronger than on Earth, but with the dropoff around The Island (no sloping seabed) the tides seldom cause trouble.
#SeptemberWorldbuilders Celesta has two moons, Naremun and Yar, in a 3:2 orbital resonance. Celestans count months by the orbit of the farther moon, Yar, and time their Day Festivals for the lunar conjunction every two months. Here is an animation of the resonance:
#SeptemberWorldbuilders Celesta was planned for standard humanite* habitation and was undergoing automated vivaforming* when something went wrong and it became inundated. The planned inhabitants seem to never have moved in.

There's a seaside cult in Ogygia that reveres the imprisoned sea titans, Phorcys and Ceto, who once tried to drown Ogygia and whose children (sirens, hydras, chimeras, gorgons) still infest the land. The cult revolves around sirens: humanoid cephalopods who manipulate
