We shouldn't be this sick, right?

Across Ireland, thousands of people are living with a chronic, complex, multi-systemic disease that keeps one in four confined to their homes- often without answers or treatment.

‘What about M.E.?’ is a collection of four-short plays written about and by people living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) & Long-Covid- exploring what it's like living on pause in a world obsessed with moving forward.

SLEEP DYSFUNCTION IN ME/CFS
"Since developing ME/CFS I require more sleep/rest because the constant ME/CFS symptoms take their toll. Sleep/rest is essential along with pacing to try and keep ME/CFS from worsening. Unfortunately sleep is not always restorative because, even if I have slept well, I still wake up feeling unrefreshed and generally below par. This is awful because the combination of ongoing ME/CFS symptoms plus this "hangover" feeling due to poor sleep quality means that you are battling ME/CFS on two fronts."

Clinical Symptomatology, Cognition & Psychosocial Wellbeing in Adolescents With Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:A Cross-Sectional Observational Study

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

#MEcfs #PwME #CFS #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #ChronicFatigueSyndrome

ABSTRACT
Aim
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disabling illness that frequently begins in adolescence, yet adolescents with ME/CFS remain an under-researched population. We aimed to characterise the cognitive and psychosocial wellbeing of adolescents with ME/CFS relative to normative benchmarks and unaffected age-peers.

Methods
Adolescents with mild-to-moderate ME/CFS (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 25) aged 10–19 years were recruited in Melbourne, Australia. Each completed a set of clinical questionnaires and cognitive assessments to assess ME/CFS symptomatology, school functioning, psychosocial wellbeing and cognition. Their caregivers also completed questionnaires regarding their psychosocial wellbeing and everyday executive functioning.

Results
Adolescents with ME/CFS showed significantly reduced information processing speed, though other measures of intellectual functioning did not differ consistently between groups. The ME/CFS group also reported significantly poorer sleep, quality of life and higher levels of anxiety and depression. Caregivers further identified significant attention and working memory concerns in the ME/CFS group, but reported no differences in internalising behaviours between groups.

Conclusion
Adolescents with ME/CFS experience substantial psychosocial and physical burden because of their illness. Cognitive difficulties in ME/CFS may reflect inefficiencies in information processing speed and fluctuating symptom burden. Discrepancies between adolescent self-report and caregiver ratings underscore the importance of inclusive perspectives in ME/CFS management. These findings support the need for flexible, paced educational and clinical accommodations and for further research into the dynamic cognitive profile of adolescents with ME/CFS across a more representative population.

Impact of sleep dysfunction in ME/CFS

#MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #ChronicFatigueSyndrome #MEcfs #CFS #PwME

Impact of sleep dysfunction in ME/CFS
"I have moderately severe ME so am mostly bed bound. Assuming that this is a baseline normal, the sleep disturbance makes the pain, cognitive issues and low mood more intense. And not being able to get away from those sensations during extended periods of sleep is especially cruel. Also as I am trying to get enough sleep it is difficult to get up during normal hours as by the time I have properly fallen asleep and had a decent amount of sleep most of the day has gone. It makes attending appointments or having people who help out round the home can only come mid afternoon onwards."

@georgemonbiot.bsky.social is a truly amazing & consistent ally, he gets how appalling the situation remains for #pwME & he's fearless in reporting it.
We need so many more journalists to follow his example

People with ME/CFS are harmed not only by the disease itself, but also by the repeated demand to justify and defend their lived experience of the physical illness, and emotionally manage other people’s disbelief, finds paper by Sven Walter.

K
Epistemic and affective injustice in ME/CFS
Epistemic injustice When people with with ME/CFS describe their symptoms, they are all too often not believed, or medicine and society lack the right concepts to understand their experience.
For example, for those with ME/CFS, symptoms worsen after exertion, but instead of being taken seriously, they may be wrongly told they are anxious, inactive, or not trying hard enough.

r
Affective injustice This is the harm done when a person's anger, grief, fear, or frustration is dismissed as inappropriate, exaggerated, or unreliable, rather than understood as a reasonable response to their situation. o Here, people with ME/CFS can be harmed not only when their symptoms are doubted, but also when their emotional responses to that doubt are judged or controlled by others.
