You don't fix one security crisis by creating another. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Delighted that Navi Pillay, chair of the UN commission which found Israel guilty of genocide in Gaza, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Let Trump and Netanyahu splutter and fume: the truth becomes ever harder to deny.

Thanks Louise!
Funny how these errors always seem to head in the same direction. A bit like Richard Tice's tax mistakes.
Illustration from today’s @theguardian.com to accompany piece by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social on the government’s Prepare campaign, which gives the public advice on how to avoid disasters whilst policies that lead us closer to crisis are given the green light
What we face. I talk to Oli Dugmore for the @newstatesman1913.bsky.social podcast about extreme weather, tipping points and the potential for systemic collapse of the global food system. Then: how we confront these threats.

Yes, bluefin
That's the problem in a nutshell. The individuation of the approach is ableist and biased against those with little money.
Me too
The government has declared datacentres “nationally significant infrastructure projects” that can be forced through the planning system. This means getting preferential access to water. Yet it has no idea what they're used for. Our dwindling supplies might be prioritised for nudifying celebrities.
This looks like a crucial investigation to me, building on an essential body of work by @bylinetimes.bsky.social Please help to support it.

The threats to our resilience are the same as the threats to our democracy: corporate lobbyists shaping policy, with dire consequences for our ability to withstand crises. Burnham seems to want to change this. But is he aware of scale of the task? My column.

Yes. ZP is a very different person to NC, and could have been a tremendous force in a coalition govt.
That was the LibDems' choice. Clegg could have bargained hard and stuck to the terms. He chose not to.
Some people here don't seem to have understood the purpose of a political party. It's not the same as a protest movement. It is a vehicle designed to get into government, to change legislation and make a material difference to the lives of people at home and abroad.
That's exactly the point. If Labour formed coalition with the Greens after a close General Election, the Green demands would include an end to material support for the Israeli government.
Let me try this once more.
It was a choice.
EITHER the Greens adopted a slogan.
OR they could have joined the next govt, where they could push for an end to arms sales, sanctions, support for the arrest warrants etc.
It was never going to be both.
Which one makes a material difference?
#GazaGenocide
Yes, I've seen some of the abuse on this site for the stance I've taken. But it won't change my belief that this motion is gesture politics of the kind you might find in a students' union. Except in this case it has real and damaging consequences - that are already playing out. A massive self-own.
For the sake of a slogan achieving nothing except great concern and distress to British Jews, Green members have probably destroyed any hope that a party - their party - which consistently and clearly opposes the #genocide will join the next government. Genius. 🤦♂️
