The music is back to normal. Maybe the contrast between the events happening and the background music was on purpose. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty

Okay, this is actually pretty unsettling. I don't like the modern upbeat music masking their cries for help as they get robbed. Its a very unnerving listen. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
I think it's interesting that the Chinese characters are just as important as the English sounds in this project. Someone who only understands English might hear familiar words, while someone who only knows Chinese is reading an entirely different poem #hwa4#yingelishiparty
I wonder if there is an intention behind the stark difference in music choice here. The change from classical Chinese music to the modern beat definitely leaves an impression. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
However, I think the negative side to this is that sometimes information can be lost or easily changed (intentionally or unintentionally). Many languages have very complex rules that go into its structure and conveyed understanding that can then alter actual meaning behind translated work. #hwa4
#hwa4 #translationasviolence Under colonial rule in some parts of Africa, they were punished for speaking their mother tongue, which kept them from growing intellectually together, sharing ideas, connecting, expressing themselves, and forced them to accept the idea that English was better
I don't know if it's because I got used to the sounds, but I feel like I can understand the English words much better now. I don't need the text as a crutch to figure out what I'm supposed to hear. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
This question sort of repeating itself and doesn’t seem to understand where I led the question. It’s asking without basic human sense which I feel it has reached its limited. We’ve been wandering around this for quite some time and it just couldn’t get it. #hwa4 #understandingeffect
I like how the instruments are part of this version of Yingelishi because Stalling describes language as having its own rhythm and music. The idea of adding traditional Chinese instruments to the poems makes the connection between language and culture even stronger. #hwa4#yingelishiparty
In regard to the first couple of minutes discussing translation, I think for one thing translation can be a double-edged sword, almost. Translating documents, literacy, research, and other forms of communication/records has been beneficial for our increased globalization #hwa4
I am a little confused while listening/ready because there seems to be multiple stories going on at once #hwa4#yingelishiparty
I wonder if the author designed these with the Sinophonetic translation is mind or the way it would sound in English. The meanings are so vastly different that it seems like an extremely difficult task to design these phrases. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
EG. “Would you rather have someone who understands you extremely well but might leave you someday, or someone who doesn't understand you completely but promises they will always stay? Why?” #hwa4 #understandingeffect
Some of these differences in meaning are honestly pretty funny. We hear about where someone should board their flight, and the Sinophonetic translation is 6 lines of a complex poem. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
It took me a while to realize that when they were singing they were actually saying some of the words on the screen because it sounded very different from what I'm used to hearing when the words are just spoken normally without being sung. #hwa4#yingelishiparty
#hwa4 #translationacts Goffman argues that we are always performing, ex: code switching. We code-switch in our friendships, with our parents, in our professional lives, and more, to cater to that audience, match their expectations, and resonate with them more. We choose how to perform for them
I just realized that if I'm understanding how this works right, Chinese speakers are hearing something completely different from the story we hear. The overlap in meaning is very different. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
I tried to close my eyes and listen for a bit to get a different experience and I'm really struggling. Without reading, it's pretty hard to pick up what some words are supposed to be. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
When the music started it immediately made me jump beause my computer was turned up all the way and the music didn't start quiet and ease in, it just immediately started, loud and sharp #hwa4#yingelishiparty
I don't know much about Chinese, but it's crazy that so few english words can translate to so many complex words in another language. #hwa4 ##yingelishiparty
