I wrote this when QUEER ORIGINS was published in the UK. I'm reposting it now the book's out in Canada and the US. Read about the natural wonder of sexual polymorphism—and why Richard Dawkins' view of Darwin needs amending. 🌈📚🦋🗃️

1/3 Aww, man — writing in 1833, John Herschel says that stellar parallax has never been measured, and that no instrument has yet been built that is “delicate enough” to make this difficult measurement. But… #science #astronomy #histsci

A somewhat flowery passage from Herschel’s Treatise on Astronomy (1836), in which he says that stellar parallax has never been observed.

If anyone wants to do #histsci research on snowflakes, Buffalo Museum of Science is the place. They have collection of glass plates of snowflake images & accompanying weather data taken by Wilson Bentley, c1900. They look beautiful.

This is a great thread!

Wrote a post a while back on the Dana Expeditions, which mapped the distribution of eel larvae in the 1920s. Oddly, a bunch of the funding came from the Carlsberg Foundation (yes, like the beer), which is celebrating its 150th.

the time for coy obfuscation is over - I can announce that the European Society for the History of Science 2028 meeting will take place in Maastricht in the last week of October or the first week of November. Maastricht hosted the first ESHS meeting in 2004, so European #histsci is coming home!

In 1901, she strapped herself into a padded oak barrel with an anvil at her feet and went over Horseshoe Falls. She was sixty-three. A charm-school teacher. Broke. And she had already sent the cat. Meet Annie Edson Taylor, Queen of the Mist.

Carin Berkowitz poses for a photo with her daughter Celia after running a marathon earlier this year. Carin is wearing orange sneakers, her race bib, and a purple lanyard reading "2026 marathon." She is carrying a bouquet of flowers. Celia is holding a poster with a large message ("GO MOMMY!") surrounded by several smaller 26.2s. Carin and Celia are standing in front of a tiled archway embedded in a wall with a mural. (I'm not sure of the precise location...)

A leading historian of science just sent me this pic, with QUEER ORIGINS nestled among some of the most respected books about Darwin. It's a huge compliment — I'm quite emotional! 😊

Do send me photos if you spot the book out 'in the wild' . . . 🏳️‍🌈📚🗃️🦋
