Iberto does not wear a mask, either real of metaphorical.

He was inclined to wear a metaphorical mask before becoming his goddess' avatar, but now what you see is what you get.

In DEAD BEATS, Seymour absolutely wears a metaphorical mask. The trouble is that he doesn’t know when the reckless, devil-may-care, impulsive, would-be Beatnik act really is just an act, or when he’s sincerely off the rails.

Jacqueline in wip2 definitely does. She often needs to switch between several masks, mostly professional with fans/journalists/other musicians/record company and private with friends/family/LI

#LGBTQWriteAThon Masks?

Mari, the bisexual model from A Work of Art (out in Nov), wears a metaphorical mask. Though she is often naked in the story, she defends herself with emotional distance from others and shallow relationships. Though she gives gregarious extrovert, true close friends are rare.

Happy #LGBTQWriteAThon 7!

In BLUDEYE BEACH, Edie very much wears her heart on her sleeve. Even when she's trying to keep secrets, it's very stressful for her. Plenty of people around her have some degree of a mask or other, for various reasons...

#LGBTQWriteAThon 7. Does MC wear a mask.

To humans he does. He has the ability to shift from his Dylogar form to a human one. A metaphorical mask is that he comes off as tough, commanding, and ruthless when he runs the magical underworld but his true self is really soft, caring, and introverted.

#LGBTQWriteAThon 6. Bugbears/fears

(I totally did the wrong book) Aidan has a few fears and anxieties. He worries he won't be as good a ruler as his father and that in turn will cause Fenrisúlfr to refuse to choose a body. He also worries that his older sister would be a better choice for Ruler

Marcus would say he doesn't: he's genuinely friendly and interested, so he loves meeting people and talking to them as much as performing. Yet he never reveals any sadder feelings because he doesn't want to worry or inconvenience others, so while he doesn't realise it, he does mask.

Alexander does wear a domino mask as part of hijinx in 1660 😂

But one of the main themes of this whole thing is that no, Alexander doesn't. He's stealth, but the elaborate male presentation, layers of flamboyant costuming, are not a disguise. The ""mask"" shows the truth.

Tharaiyelagh has never learned masking, but he is learning to be a little clever with the truth.

Akieryon hides a great deal about himself.

Van-Dal (member of main cast but not MC) wears a mask for work.

Zen wears a bark beetle helmet and Rune wears a milkweed beetle one. They also both wear oxygen masks since the air is toxic.

Azraa doesn't have to wear these things since she has the forest's blessing but she will to fit in when going into populated areas

Charlie's laughter is usually genuine, but it can also function as a mask.
As a kid, she was taught to laugh at her pain.
When in doubt, she performs amusement.

Again, it's genuine, but maybe not as big as she makes it look.
She thinks thats the only emotion she's allowed to show.

Because Ephemeral deals with political intrigue, all of the characters wear some sort of mask. Ziyaad wears the metaphorical mask of being chief of his clan. When titled as 'the Usil', everyone has to see him as someone in control, who knows what he's doing and does it perfectly

Alex acts like a hyper golden retriever puppy and a spoiled 3 year old. But he's extremely angry and feels extremely guilty. He just does not know what to do with those feelings, so he hides them, and hides from them, while he's trying to figure it out. It's been years at this point

Jumping back into #LGBTQWriteAThon.

Nadezhda does not wear any kind of mask. She's the kind of person that is open with her intentions, usually to her detriment.

Khyr is considered dangerous, even feral, and has been forced to wear a muzzle over his mouth (and yes, he has bitten before).

@ambooneauthor.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 1:29 PM

Y'know... not physically, but he probably should when he's off doing a phantom thievery. Would probably make it harder for him to get caught.

Metaphorically, he does wear the mask of being closeted (even to himself!) for half the damn book.

Yes, metaphorical. A few of my characters struggle with neurodivergent masking: Raquel and Lila.

And others put on a mask in response to trauma aka fawning or mirroring: Nina and Vye.

Good morning #LGBTQWriteAThon 7 "Reunion Tour" is set in 2024 and although my MCs are less risk averse than I am, the band's lead guitarist has elevated risk factors for COVID complications and masks in most indoor settings. Metaphorically, Nicola went by Nykky in her heavy metal days, when she was
