He threw his pocket-watch into the Seine, tucked his umbrella into bed, and cut two cat-flaps because the kitten needed her own. Meet André-Marie Ampère: founder of electrodynamics, who once chased a fiacre down the street to finish a proof.

Day 14 #SciArtSeptember prompt crescent: 👩🏼‍🔬🧮🎢🔭 #histsci mathematician & astronomer Nicole-Reine Lepaute (1723-1788)! My linocut celebrates her calculated path of the solar eclipse of 1764. She also worked with Alexis Clairaut & Jérôme Lalande to precisely calculate the date of return of Halley’s

My linocut print of mathematician & astronomer Nicole-Reine Lepaute (1723-1788) in a vertical gradient (bottom to top) of bright pink to lavender on white paper. She wears a wig and gown and the portrait is from the chest to head. Her 12 diagrams of the phases of the annular the solar eclipse of 1764 as viewed from Paris appear across her shoulders. Behind her head in green is her map of the path of the eclipse across Europe.

Rafael Sorkin (1945–2026) combined theoretical depth with a rare intellectual curiosity.

A pioneer of causal set theory, he pictured spacetime as a locally finite set of events in which causal order and number give rise to geometry.

He leaves a profound absence. RIP.

For the Day 13 diamond shape prompt of #SciArtSeptember I am sharing Marjorie Rice (née Jeuck, 1923–2017) who discovered 4 new pentagonal tilings of the Euclidian plane! 👩🏼‍🔬🧮🧪 #histsci

The San Diego mother of 5 (6th died in infancy) completed half a correspondence art course after high school & had

My linocut portrait of Marjorie Rice with 4 groupings of her 4 pentagonal tiling patterns in pale orange, pink, purple and lime. Her shirt is a pattern of orange butterflies and white daisies on a dark green background. The pattern is based on the orange pentagonal tiling. She is shown in green with a background of yellow at her neckline to lime going up with lines and details overprinted in dark green. She is smiling at the viewer.
