Finished the Castlevania: Belmont's Curse demo.

I have mixed feelings at this stage. Some things I like (graphics, story thus far), some things I'm not big on (combat, music). We'll see how the full game turns out...

It's now been 40 years since Castlevania (or Akumajou Dracula technically) was first released in Japan by Konami for the Famicom Disk System, with its NES release following in North America the year after. Given that I've been in a Halloween mood over the past month or so and finally finished my Compile binge recently, I figured I'd get to playin' some Castlevania games (and it just so happens that I finally watched the original 1931 Dracula movie a few days before the Castlevania anniversary). Lo and behold, I finally managed to beat the game that started it all, after having playing it on-and-off for over a decade, just days AFTER the anniversary (in fact, I finally beat Rondo of Blood on the PC Engine CD the day after that)! It felt awesome to finally do it given how much that game has kicked my ass. The news of the anniversary also made me realize that it would be to cover Vampire Killer, the iconic theme of the game's first area and probably the most famous song associated with the franchise. I would've normally waited 'til October as per my Halloween chiptune tradition, but I made an exception to do it as soon as I could (and I might cover another Castlevania song in October, but we'll see). I remembered that someone requested about a year ago that I do a cover of Vampire Killer on the YM2151/OPM in the style of the original arcade version of Contra, another one of Konami's legendary '80s classics. I normally don't take requests (though I am still willing to hear them out in the comments), but this idea was honestly so good that I decided to hold on to it. I'm real glad I did, cuz this turned out to be a really cool cover. Contra's music used a lot of cool FM patches, so it was great making use of them for a Castlevania song. I will say that the tom/hi-hat combo patch had to tuned WAY down from how it normally sounds in the arcade since the toms did NOT fit for Vampire Killer.
