Originally, stonework was commonplace, and windows weren't, because glass hadn't been invented yet when the Ghan Desert was first colonised and settled by travellers entering the sands.

They brought Ice Gems with them. 🧵

Mostly stone and clay, built to last. Some ancient buildings are thousands of years old!

As for temperature control... Well, they don't. Necari can withstand the extreme temperatures very well. There are some heaters and cooling units at the palace, but they're rarely used.

#OctoberWorldbuilders …He built like those who taught him—he, armored and safely in his sealed vestments as he watched—with stone, and with mud daub those days it rained, mixed with matweed fiber. He finished the structure himself, but payed in hides and gems to to have the finer details completed.

#OctoberWorldbuilders DuMar, during his self-imposed exile, chose a nearly lifeless desert for his home — primarily so his affliction would not kill anything else, as he is cursed so no living thing may touch his skin, breathe his breath, or even smell his scent without an immediate, painful death…

#OctoberWorldbuilders …Despite trading for genetics and vivaforming expertise (including centuries ago, unknowingly, with Q'Enmari herself), Greem has unstable ecologies that frequently collapse and change…

#OctoberWorldbuilders I have been so focused on Celesta that I completely forgot: I have a whole galaxy of planets to choose from! On Greem, there are definitely deserts. Known for their humanite genetics expertise, Greem has had significant challenges with ecological genetics…

On the far outskirts of Soreia, in Divolka's town of Dry Lake, houses are imported lumber, clay, with very unreliable roofs of straw and thatched reeds/weeds.

In Glass Arm, that part of Soreia is all mesas with plenty of sandstone to utilize.

You'd think a very tall tower housing an entire university would be a terrible idea in a desert - but only if you didn't know that it includes the university's magic studies department and cooling spells are well-established.
Poor people just have to endure the heat, though.

When dragonfolk had cities on the plains of Seyzharel, they made use of wind towers for cooling. In the mountains they mostly need to worry about keeping the wind out.

The people of the plains do not often have permanent dwellings.

Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! Let's talk about buildings in our desert societies. What is the architecture like? How do they keep their homes warm/cool as needed?

The background image display trees in a peaceful forest during autumn, with lots of yellows and oranges. It feels very much like October and has a serene vibe

The Malkaana is home to the Tarik, a loose collection of nomadic tribes and caravan towns with a common tongue and matriarchal culture. Each is led by its own Amira; no one has ever united the Tarik.

Day 2. What's your dessert society like?

There isn't much there. Just bones.

There are nomadic people who live in the forest. They're very strongly shaped by their landscape and the spirits around them and have been described as war-like by some (it's not entirely accurate).
They strongly identify with smaller groups within this cultural sphere

The Malkaana, or Sea of Sands, stretches across the middle of Anura, from the Adirene Gulf to the Drachenrüchen Mountains.

About two thirds of it is sandy desert, while the western third is much rockier, but both are very harsh.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 2: Do I actually mention any of this anywhere? Any Ene-Tithrik characters? Do my characters actually ever visit Tithrik in person? NOPE. I think I refer to the High Desert once. Out of context. But I know what's going on there, and that's what's important when writing, right?

#OctoberWorldbuilders 2: Today, Light is considered to be the mother of the Tithriki Administrative Expanse. "Hard as Stone", a definitive biography, describes the short woman's reputation for blunt honesty among her political rivals and for gentle humour among her friends. People are complicated.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 2: The first Ene-Tithrik Adminstrator of the united Tithriki state, Light was a controversial figure in her day, frequently criticized for ignoring the Assembly and attempting to govern by edict as the Ene Hierarchs would have in their underground fortresses.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 2: (One famous example was Light Through The Borehole, serving her second term as Tithrik's Administrator of State when the brave women of the Explorer Corps first returned with Tithrik's first message from the stars.)
