TODAY is #NationalPoetryDay so we're sharing again this poem - Sanctuary by Karen Kaiser - which speaks to us of the experience we hope to create in our Open Table communities:
'You are beloved
and you belong'.
#ComeAsYouAre #MoreThanWelcome #FaithfullyLGBT

Black-and-white image of a poem titled “Sanctuary” by Karen Kaiser, 2022, overlaid on a photograph of a house and trees. The poem reflects on the meaning of welcome and sanctuary, particularly for people who do not fit conventional expectations, and calls for the church to be a safe, accepting place where people are loved, celebrated and made to feel that they belong.

Happy #NationalPoetryDay! ✨✏️

Today feels especially fitting for a reminder about the David Laing CBE Young People Poetry Award 2026.

The deadline for entries is Monday 5th October. Winners will be invited to perform their work at our Annual Awards in November.

Day 1 of the #DailyNature Journal Prompt calendar.

It's #NationalPoetryDay in the UK; how could I not talk about Mary Oliver?

'Don't you imagine the leaves dream now?'

Write below what you think the leaves were dreaming of...

#NatureWriting #Poetry #WordGames

October 1st: Poetry Day
"Don't you imagine the Leaves dream now"
Read Mary Oliver's poem: Song for Autumn.
Write your own response to a line within it, perhaps what the leaves dream?

For National Poetry Day, I submit my favourite Bard-adjacent work from Carol Ann Duffy

#NationalPoetryDay

‘Item I gyve unto my wief my second best bed…’
(from Shakespeare’s will)

The bed we loved in was a spinning world
of forests, castles, torchlight, cliff-tops, seas
where he would dive for pearls. My lover’s words
were shooting stars which fell to earth as kisses
on these lips; my body now a softer rhyme
to his, now echo, assonance; his touch
a verb dancing in the centre of a noun.
Some nights I dreamed he’d written me, the bed
a page beneath his writer’s hands. Romance
and drama played by touch, by scent, by taste.
In the other bed, the best, our guests dozed on,
dribbling their prose. My living laughing love –
I hold him in the casket of my widow’s head
as he held me upon that next best bed.

Carol Ann Duffy

From New Selected Poems 1984-2004 (Picador, 2004). Originally published in The World’s Wife (Macmillan, 1999).

"Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day"

(Emily Brontë)

Happy #NationalPoetryDay! This year's theme is wonder & we got wonderous on the pod with Francesca Beard and Chris Redmond of Hot Poets Collective. Hot Poets have teamed up with National Poetry Day to bring poetry & science together to address the climate emergency.
