#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 3

This month, I'll be sharing snippets from my prequel novella to The Brumewalker Archives, a grimdark fantasy heavily inspired by the RPG Legend of Legaia.

Today's looks at the purpose of the mavericks, adventurers who brave the Brume to find supplies.

Fantasy Indies Spooktober Day 3: Saturday SnippetSnippet of text from my prequel novella to BWA, explaining the purpose behind the mavericks, groups of adventurers within each town who brave the dangers of the Brume in order to acquire additional food and supplies.

3- #FantasyIndiesSpooktober- She wanted to smile, but she couldn't get her mouth to cooperate. Her eyes & the shaking of her hands joined the mutiny. She turned further from Rowan's view, not wanting to worry him more than she already had. So damn close. She was so damn close.

I haven't actually had time to write much this week. So, here's an old one. This one hasn't had an edit pass yet.

From Such Sweet Sorrow.

"Do you... want to talk about it?"

"I don't even know what to say, Beks. What did it look like?"

I shrugged. "I watched it, but I wasn't sure entirely what happened. It looked like you were being dragged along."

"It was like something grabbed me. I didn't see anything, but I felt it." She rolled up her sleeves, twisting to look at her forearms. I gasped as she did; deep red impressions painted her wrists, already starting to shift from initial irritation to a bruised blue. "It was like I was cemented in place. My shoulders locked and I couldn't get away, and I got this overwhelming horrible feeling."

“Can your magic make me a mermaid?”

“Not doing that.”

“Aw, c’mon Kiki. Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo me. So long as there’s no chance you accidentally turn me into a frog. Unless you have to kiss me to change me back, in which case please turn me into a frog as soon as possible.”

Saturday snippet

Here's the opening from Rites of Depature (coming March 23!)

ajcalvin.net/books/the-fo...

Haunting the site of your death isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The worst part? No one knows I'm here. It's bloody boring. I've been without a decent conversation in centuries.
But the best part? No one knows I'm here. It makes pranks all the more thrilling when my visitors are completely unaware of my presence.
Unfortunately, unaware is the opposite descriptor of the mage currently staring me down from the stairwell. He sees me, which is going to make our first conversation a bit awkward.
I just trashed his expensive equipment, but in my defense, I didn't know he could see me. And most people - mages included - turn tail and run when faced with the prospect of a real paranormal encounter. It looks like he's an exception.
Shit.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober 3: Saturday Snippet

I just bought a house, life's changing seasons, and I'm feeling autumnal. Here's a snip from THE GOD SPEAR, my most autumnal Triempery book, about the essence of the season.
#WritingCommunity

Left side of image is a meme of a month's worth of daily writing prompts for authors of fantasy fiction. Prompts sit atop a background of two cartoon ghosts.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from THE GOD SPEAR, book 4 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Snip is of an autumn scene in an orchard:

In the warm sun that drenched the orchard, they breathed air heavy with an odor of apples decaying among fallen leaves, of summer’s passage and the structure of the orchard crumbling back into the stuff of Creation. Essera, sifting down into essential elements, struggled toward a new order and would never again be as it was. The fruits of its glory had been consumed or lay spoiling in full ferment among the ruins of what had been. And Dorilian Sordaneon refused to see it. He still saw Essera in terms of the Highborn Triempery of old, damaged but viable.

Image of the book cover of THE GOD SPEAR, book 4 of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Cover is gold, orange and red and shows a young woman walking along a country lane toward a distant hill crowned with antlers.

Tagline reads: It will take a god to awaken a god.

Day 2: Recommended spooky read: Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones.

It's gruesome but so immersive and well researched. Hard to look and hard to look away. Rooted in this country's horrific past. Must read.

#FantasyIndiesSpooktober Day 2: Spooky media! Books: F. Paul Wilson is a go-to (though I've gone off him as a person). TV: Widow's Bay for a recent fave; Supernatural, Buffy for all-time faves. Movies: Hmm. Don't watch a lot of horror movies. Most of the ones I've seen have been so cliched.
