#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 20

"Continued" or "stated" are ones I had to tone down. "Apparently" is another one, thankfully easiest to spot and correct!

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 19 - Saturday Snippet

The current rough opening of my new WIP about a shapeshifter spy

#WriteSky #WritingPrompt #WritingCommunity

Fantasy Indies Prompt Day 19 - Saturday SnippetZephyr Corso was about to save the empire for the third time, assuming they didn’t die of boredom from listening to this damn monologue.
By all the spirits, the man had been raving for almost five minutes straight. The words didn’t really matter; Zephyr wasn’t really listening. They’d heard it all before. “My armies will raze the empire to ashes,” and “The blood of the Emperor will paint the streets of the capital red,” and “I will birth a new nation and the whole world will worship me as a new god!”
So on and so forth.
It wasn’t even an original plan. Binding life spirits to the dead bodies of an old battlefield? It’d been tried at least once a decade for the last hundred years. Every budding dark lord thought they were the first person to think of animating a mass casualty event. Zephyr never understood why—it was the most obvious path to take to create an army of the dead. Surely if it worked the empire would have already fallen to legions of undead.
At least if they’d tried to reanimate a dead dragon or something, Zephyr could give them points for creativity. This was just sad.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember Day 19: Snippet

Image from Scrivener below, text in the alt text:

Dr. O shakes his head, but not in disapproval. "It's not your fault, Mike," he says kindly, and I'm instantly on my guard. He's never this nice. I've had him as an advisor or a professor for six years now, and he's never been one to let the slightest mistake slide. This is not the slightest mistake - this is the kind of thing that could have blown up his entire plan for posterity in one fell swoop, and I missed it. "Hey, it's not your fault," he repeats, putting one hand on my shoulder and squeezing. "Breathe. You're OK. I know you're panicking, but you're OK."
Ah, the panic. Sometime my sophomore year my system decided to treat every small inconvenience as a deadly threat and send my adrenaline into overdrive. I was late to class? Everything is awful and I'm going to die! Missed a line on a homework assignment and so didn't get all the points I could have? Going to die. Sweats, difficulty breathing, muscles tight, ready to run screaming into the void at the slightest provocation. Dr. O was the first professor to actually witness this embarrassing situation and help me figure out what it was, and help me find ways to combat it. He must be seeing the signs right now, because he pushes me into a desk chair and kneels down in front of me.
"Just focus on your breath, Mike." He takes an exaggerated breath in and I mimic him without thinking, then let it out slowly the same way. After a few cycles of reminding myself how to breathe (because of course I forget how to do that in the midst of everything), I look him in the eye.

Day 19 of #FantasyIndiesSeptember

Another unedited snippet from Book 8 of my Oracle of Delphi series WIP. This is from about 130 CE, where Greece (and the Roman Empire) gets a new deity to worship.

#WritingCommunity

"There is terrible news," Senior Priest Titus began. "Imperator Hadrianus is grieving the loss of his companion, Antinous."

"What happened?" Pythia Maera asked.

"As you may remember, Hadrianus has been in Egypt this year, for he and Antinous went on a lion hunt in the Libyan desert. During their travel on the River Nile, Antinous drowned, but there is nothing more known about how or why. It is said Hadrianus was inconsolable for many days afterward, and has now ordered the deification of his beloved companion."

"What does that mean, exactly? Deification?" Lanike asked.

"It means Antinous is now a god," Maera replied.

"Yes. Exactly so," Titus confirmed. "And so, I will ensure an altar is built for Antinous, and a proper statue."List of daily post prompts for indie fantasy authors for September.

19) Auri and her mom's relationship hurts me. (This is before I changed to first person POV.) #FantasyIndiesSeptember

Auri dug her heels into place and stared hard at her mom, willing her to meet her eyes. “Did you even watch me?”

Mom hesitated, but Auri didn’t need her answer. Mom was well down the road, waiting by her scorching teleportation circle she ordered. Dad had been the one to come get Auri. Mom had come nowhere near it.

“We will talk about this at home,” Mom said now, falling back on Da’s line. But they wouldn’t. They would ride home in tense silence and then Mom would tell Auri she was grounded, and they would never speak about it again.

Or Auri would try, and Mom would shut her down.

She didn’t care. Juma’s mom had come with her to the trials and wished her luck. Other kids had parents in the stands, cheering and waving flags with their names on them. But Auri’s mom was so deadset on Auri being normal that she couldn’t even both to watch and see if Auri could be great.

Auri’s face flushed with anger. “Just because you never try for anything doesn’t mean I’m going to give up!”

The silence was deafening; the surrounding darkness, thick.

Intangible.

I was alive; that much I knew.

My muscles felt tense, as if I had run for a very long time.

I breathed in the heavier, more humid air that still tasted better than the white smoke I choked on earlier.

Aloe and Such Sweet Sorrow. I finished Aloe this week though, so I'll have to stop sharing stuff as WIPs lol!

A snippet from in Acanthus' POV from Aloe by Artemis Quinn. It says:

Alone once more, I tilted my head back and admired the fairy lights woven among the branches of a tree. I suppose retirement is off the table in terms of empathy. You never really stop helping others. As I stared up at the pretty twinkling lights, my mind was made.

This is why I was fighting a losing battle.

Come hell or high water, I could not abandon the people I care for again.A snippet from Such Sweet Sorrow by Artemis Quinn. It says:

I didn't answer as I walked towards the driver's seat. When I slipped in and started the engine, the heat blared as the truck roared to life. At least I wouldn't be wet and cold for too long. I glanced towards the side mirror, looking at Mark in the small water-dotted glass. He didn't move from the sidewalk; stock still as he watched the van. "He's going to make himself sick for the sake of watching me leave," I muttered.

The words weren't a comfort.

Why did this hurt so much?

My breath kept catching in my throat, and my eyes were stinging again. With a frustrated groan, I dropped my head against the seat. "I'm so fucking tired of crying," I complained to the empty cab.

19. Saturday Snippet

Well, I said I was done with that draft, and then I got some great ideas from my stalwart alpha reader that I had to work in. I'll pause it after that.

So this is from Sparklebloom Meadows, Therapist 11, 1st draft. Sedge gives JustWren a gender crisis.

Snippet:

/Hello. Yes. You. You are new?/

Its mouth didn’t move; the words seemed to form inside my head. My eyes were locked to the creature, but in my peripheral vision I saw Berry turn and backtrack.

They jogged up beside me and bobbed a quick bow. “Honored Dragon. Hello.” To me, without looking away from the dragon, they added, “Don’t freak out.”

/You are not new,/ the dragon said, its snout swinging toward Berry. /I have met you before, Berry-farmer, friend of Gustav and Rene. You grow plants northwest of here, near the shelled town./

“That’s me. And yes, he’s new. Justin, this is Sedge, the spirit of the Western Plains. Honored Dragon Sedge, this is Justin.”

/That isn’t right,/ the dragon said, its wedge-shaped green head at a tilt. /But your friend wears that name for now./ The fluffy crests on its cheeks perked up as my stomach dropped. /Justin-for-now, hello. You are a guest in my world and my plains. Be welcome./

“Uh, th-thank you. Honored Dragon,” I added, copying Berry.

With another nod to the dragon, Berry caught my sleeve and pulled me along the road. I hastened to follow. When we were out of earshot, they said in my ear, “I think Sedge doesn’t trust Visitors too much. They’ll probably warm up when you make some friends with otherworlders.”

The only thing reverberating around my head was /Justin-for-now. Justin-for-now. Justin-for-now./ If breakfast hadn’t been so long ago, I’d have left it on the cobblestones.

“I have a brunch date with a friend, but please make sure Billy eats at least three things that aren’t instant ramen.”

Billy opened their mouth.

“Putting other things on top of ramen doesn’t count.”

That shut them up.

Saturday snippet

This one's from The Talisman of Delucha, book 2 in The Relics of War series.

ajcalvin.net/books/relics...

Three people walk through a dark area filled with the statuary of fantastical beasts.

Text reads:
"What can our small group hope to accomplish against the entirety of the Murkor army?" he asked, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "We are seven against thousands."
