The large, stocky bird has rich buff-brown plumage heavily patterned with dark brown streaks, bars, and a black cap. It is flying horizontally to the right with its broad, rounded wings spread, revealing a barred pattern on the wing feathers. Its long, yellowish-green legs and feet stretch out behind its body, and its sharp, dagger-like bill points forward.
