I'd make #books from toilet paper,
folding sheets at the perforation.
The tracing-paper kind was best
(it was useless for the toilet).

I don't remember what I wrote.
I drew the windows from playschool:
round, square, arched.

I tried to show my son
but the paper was too soft.

Inspired by @jenthorne.bsky.social's poem, this is also a pre-Bluesky write where I challenged myself to create a poem using the titles of every book and magazine that were on my coffee table.

I go into the store
and walk back out
heavy with
#books in a bag
no longer orphaned
time to give them
a brand new home
the pages worn
with loving hands

the worst day of my life
pocket bulging with quarter tips
from my paper routes
walked to the newstand on main street
not only were they out of wacky packages
but some asshole had pre-creased
the fold-in pictures in every mad magazine

wish I had the wurbs to tell yew
how I pine for you unseen
rooted here I cannot leave
though my hopes stay evergreen

I branch out ever skyward
every day a little more gnarled
but should you seek a canopy
