And here’s something visual & musical for #NationalPoetryDay

The Parlando Project has released over 900 combinations of poetry with original music during the past decade. I think this one is among the most beautiful: youtu.be/yIiUhMtObO0?...

This year the theme is #WONDER, and want to use today to celebrate my anniversary. It has been a big year.

Happy #NationalPoetryDay everyone, with special thanks and love to @daveashleypoet.bsky.social and @sonnetsmith.bsky.social who give me endless support and friendship 🖤💚

A Year Of Wonder

Twenty-five poems published.
One international win.
But the real surprise
wasn't the prize.
It was discovering
poems were keys.

They opened doors
once locked to a timid child
and released friends,
adventures,
unexpected cities,
new versions of myself
that I didn't want to hide.

A year ago I found
the words within:
my release
into this world.

It was exactly one year ago I started writing poetry properly. I came home from an event to celebrate the appointment of our junior Poet Laureate and wrote this for #NationalPoetryDay 2025. This was the first poem I ever shared with anyone.

The theme was PLAY and I chose to do an acrostic.

The Last Summer of Play

Packing sand around feet and legs,
Lacking supervision while parents are
Attacking seagulls that threaten the picnic and
Yakking with neighbours on the beach.

Postcard-perfect summer afternoons.
Lifeguard hut becomes a ship to
Asgard, or anywhere beyond the school
Yard from which you have escaped.

Pier jumping while adults stand and
Leer and shout out rules which you don’t
Adhere to. Not you – you’ll be bigger next
Year, and then you’ll show them!

Pour over books on seascape
Lore. Hunting for treasure washed
Ashore. A final chance to play before
You’re too old to remember how.

Happy to share my fave poem ever

(And I made it to the Rue de Siam, although it’s no great shakes as a thoroughfare because it was rebuilt completely after WW2)

Barbara

Rappelle-toi Barbara
Il pleuvait sans cesse sur Brest ce jour-là
Et tu marchais souriante
É panouie ravie ruisselante
Sous la pluie
Rappelle-toi Barbara
Il pleuvait sans cesse sur Brest
Et je t'ai croisée rue de Siam
Tu souriais
Et moi je souriais de même
Rappelle-toi Barbara
Toi que je ne connaissais pas
Toi qui ne me connaissais pas
Rappelle-toi
Rappelle-toi quand même ce jour-là
N'oublie pas
Un homme sous un porche s'abritait
Et il a crié ton nom
Barbara

It's #NationalPoetryDay!

To celebrate, here's five things to know about haiku from Robert Crawford, author of Haiku: How the modern world came to fall in love with small poems from Japan.

It’s UK #NationalPoetryDay and here’s “Revery,” a #PoemsAloud musical presentation of a portion of a too narrowly appreciated American poet’s poetry. “I was the summer/I was the autumn” he wrote. frankhudson.org/2026/09/30/a...

Happy #NationalPoetryDay I enjoyed illustrating this wonderful collection of poems by @lawrencemoore.bsky.social as it was like going on an epic quest with him. Please check it out #poetrycommunity
Hardcover £9.99: amzn.eu/d/06nvd7Et

It took me a long time to illustrate his collection, mostly using pencil. The cover art features one of my favourite views of Storr on the Isle of Skye, with Lawrence and Matt in the foreground.

Incantation

I'll weave you a wind spell that smells of the sea -
Of salt grit and wave break left warp and weft be.
I'll witch chant charm chanty of cloud scudding sound
Fog mares tearing tales on rough cliffs run agound.
I'll ghost people potions with powers that aren't there
With presences sensed in the stillest of air.
I'll sing up sea spirits like sirens to lure
With moon silver song too star bright to endure.
I'll dazzle dull eyes with what eyes have not heard:
The marvellous curse of the magical word. The moon shines through a tangle of black tree boughs and branches.
