From Dust and Shadows
-Tinkerbell remembers the first time she met Peter when she sees him crying
#WritingCommunity

It brought memories of when they first met. Tink found him crying alone, after he got lost in the forest by his home. She asked a similar question she had asked when they first met.
“Peter, why are you crying?” She said, flying over to him. Her green eyes met his blue ones. It made her smile how quickly he tried to regain his composure. She watched Peter wipe away his tears and try to have an aura of confidence. His head held up, and chest straightened out. The sight always made her chuckle.
“I’m not crying, Tinkerbell,” Peter said, but his brave facade faded as he went over to his desk. He slumped over and fiddled with a few pencils, but slowly fidgeting became worse. His rapid breathing kept building until the confidence broke. Then his tears fell again.

After poison, an assassination attempt, political confrontations at every hour, and no sleep, Cobeah wanders the palace alone. Its halls have become too large, and every echo belongs to someone she has failed.

From QUEEN FOR A DAY.

#Sustember #AmWriting #DarkFantasy #MythicFantasy

For the first time in her life, Cobeah felt alone.

Even in her adolescent years, sailing coastal shoals and open seas, there had always been a crew at her back, ship-timbers creaking in rough harmony with her orders.

In the years that followed, as Admiral, she had a support system to brace her. Now there was nothing. One of the last souls she could trust without question was her daughter, Taliah. The most recent reports claimed the queen-to-be still struggled through labor, and it would be weeks before Cobeah could rely on Taliah again. Her daughter was suffering in the palace halls above, and Cobeah wasn’t there for her.

What kind of mother leaves her child to labor alone? Yet how can I be there?

Disaya had asked her to endure. So Cobeah wandered the water-hewn halls, lost, searching for her daughter, whom she could no longer reach, and the single other person she could trust.
“Leola?” she called as she stumbled down an empty corridor. “Are you here? Where is everyone? Aulay? Do you have news of Taliah? Where has she gone? I can’t find her.”

The ghosts of those she had failed answered from the darkness behind her, but Cobeah refused to look back into the shadowed passage. Her footsteps splashed through thin sheets of water that veiled the floor; the echoes behind her did not always match her stride as they clamored for justice and their chance at restitution.

#Sustember 12!

As dusk fell over the hollow Khi marveled at the vast number of glimmering bugs that had begun lighting up the hollow. The fireflies winked at each other in the twilight like lovers lost in the night. Khi stepped around the side of the cottage towards the road. Looking for where the moonlight would hit, trying to locate a piece of moonstone but the night was too overcast and the light was dim so Khi called it a night and walked into the cottage.

This snippet is from my story THE OILY, which is a haunted house story. Lara and her brother Nate are cleaning out their dad's house after his death. They think they are alone. They are not. This story is published & I'm reading from it at a book reading Oct 9 in Gloucester, MA.

Snippet from THE OILY

"Dammit, Nate! Get over here! Don't leave me alone like this, you shit!"

A cool hand grasped hers and led her along the cellar. She stumbled to keep up as she was nearly dragged in the dark.

"Don't walk so fast. I can't see, and I'm going to fall. And don't hold my hand so tightly. You're hurting me."

The only response was to drag her faster, panting and grunting all the way. He must have been as scared as she was. Her hand holding the flashlight scraped the wall, tearing her flesh and she winced at the pain, but she used her mangled hand to keep a grip on something solid so she wouldn't lose her balance. In the darkness she lost her sense not only of direction but of up and down, as if she were a diver lost deep in a black sea, thinking she was swimming towards the surface only to swim deeper and deeper until she drowned, exhausted and out of air.

Her head spun with confusion and fear as her stomach lurched, bile churned by dread and dizziness. She fought off vomiting as Nate dragged her further through the cellar. She shook the flashlight a few times but it wouldn't light. After what couldn't have been more than a minute or two, Nate released her grip and light from her flashlight illuminated her path enough to make her squint her eyes at the sudden brightness.

Nate lay on the ground a few yards ahead of her.

She raced to him, fearing he lost his footing in the darkness, but when she touched him his skin, slack and pale, nearly slid off in her hand. He lay on his back, a wild grimace marring his handsome face; one hand clawed over his chest. Damn it, his heart finally gave out.

Morvin Reese cranes her neck, looking down at the scraggly band of wayward children shivering in front of her. They’re a sorry lot - reddened eyes, cotton jackets wet with tears. Around them loom a half dozen men of the Cormoth Watch in heavy plate, shine faded to a dull gray, their halberds raised at the tiny band of captives. Their faces are set as stone, their gaze never wavering..

And yet the children aren’t looking back at the armed men. Some look past them, towards the onlookers gathering on the side of the street, trying to make eye contact with their parents. Most are looking at Morvin, with her crisp blue and white uniform, cravat and peaked shako with the silver eye above the rim. The kids turn away as they spot her gaze, looking down to the cobbles and murmuring. “Beg pardon, madame Inquisitor.”

It’s hard not to have your stomach twist at the sight of innocent children terrified of you.

There’s a wheezing chuckle behind her, accompanied by heavy steps and the clank of chainmail. Norris Sudlow, the gaoler of Castle Cormoth, wasn’t as well armored as the watch - and wasn’t as used to stirring from his dank little abode. Still, there’s a toothy grin on his face as he sidles up to the out-of-towner.

“So, yer ladyship. Whadaya think?!”

[T]ension hung over the assemblage like fog. Congregants fidgeted with jewelry and silverware. Eyes moved fast and furtively. Seatmates murmured about the fire and curses, although most of their words were lost beneath the ambient noise.

From my crime WIP.
Nate and Eric cook together, but then, Nate gets swept into a vivid memory flash. (cw blood)

“Hey!” He jolted at Eric’s voice. “You cut yourself?”
Nate looked at his hand. Blood. He turned it, watching, mesmerized, blood pearl from his left index finger down the back of his hand.
Eric grabbed it. “Merde! Ok, sit down. Good thing I’m a doctor. It’s my fault, I should have told you how sharp that knife was.” He stormed to the bathroom and came back with a box. Popping the lid open, he took a bottle of disinfectant and sprayed it on a piece of gauze, holding his palm out.
Nate gave him his hand, silent. Letting him swipe it with that cool liquid which stung a bit. Wipe the blood off and press a larger gauze on it, holding it tight.
His voice made Nate look at him. “Is blood making you sick? You’re extremely pale.”
Nate looked down at his hand. “No…” Frowning a bit. “I don’t remember cutting myself.”
Eric smiled. “Dreamer. Your eyes get lost a lot. I noticed.”
Nate swallowed. “It was a memory… I think…” Trying to grasp that whisp from the past, but it had vaulted away with his voice. His voice. His smile. He shuddered, focusing back on Eric who was just holding his hand, pressing the gauze on his cut. “I’m sorry.”
“Why apologize? It’s not your fault. And I won’t ask, ok? It is your private stuff. Here. Looks better. Let me bandage this.”

My #Sustember answer

This is from Aloe, the 2nd book in my dark fantasy series #TFTNG

I'm so close to finishing edits on this beast.

A snippet from Aloe by Artemis Quinn in Acanthus' POV. It says:

How brightly my auburn hair shone in the sunlight. I was a beacon amongst the green and gray. I glanced up at the windows, ignoring how they felt like cold, judging eyes. One wayward glance through the wobbly panes would expose me. What do I do?

This might be illegal, but I reworked a scene from QUEEN FOR A DAY for today’s #Sustember prompt.

Cobeah goes to the Royal Orchards seeking silence and fresh air. Instead, she finds sharp blades and dark magicks in the shadows.

#AmWriting #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #DarkFantasy #MythicFantasy

Less than a day after being crowned queen, Cobeah found herself hunted for her deeds. With her back pressed to an apple tree within the royal orchards, she held her breath as a twig snapped nearby.

Something small and fast hummed through the air. Cobeah turned as a quoit punched into the tree beside her head with a wet, wooden thud.

Silence dropped over the glade like a hood. The birds vanished mid-song. Insects stopped their buzzing as if someone had pinched the world shut. Even her own breath sounded wrong, muffled inside her skull. A magickal shroud of stillness settled around the orchard row, and her ears popped with the pressure of it.

Another quoit came, a dark disc spinning out of the shadows. Cobeah ripped one of her own from behind her back and snapped it up, knocking the hurled blade aside. The clash rang once, flat and ugly. The silence swallowed even that.

A figure stepped out from the darker-than-usual gaps between trees. An assassin, wielding blades and magicks. A deep hood hid their face; the cloth shimmered with warding, ensuring nothing beneath would catch light. Black-dyed boiled leather lay over a loose shirt and trousers, obscuring form and gender.
A scream for help would only get her killed before anyone arrived, if they could arrive at all. The magickal silence dampened everything. Nothing left this row of trees. No cries. No clash. No dying noises to draw the royal guard back in.

“I’ll wait here while you run off for reinforcements,” Cobeah said, and her voice sounded wrong inside the bubble, like it belonged to someone else. Only a snort answered her. “I hate easy fights. You know even if you succeed, I’m taking you to the abyss with me.”

A blade flashed on her left. She turned aside, quoit snapping up to knock the dagger away. The attacker rushed in; she pivoted and checked them with her offhand quoit, a sharp clack on leather and bone. They were testing her, learning tempo and searching for hesitation.

They would find none.

To fight with quoits on land differed from a ship’s deck that bucked and rolled beneath you. She had trained for both. At sea, she favored fast jabs and jerking cuts, ending things quickly no matter the cost. Here she kept low, longer arcs, feet sliding over loam and using trunks as cover and constraint. She kept her vitals on the move and out of harm’s way, herding her attacker into angles where they could only reach her head-on.
A sudden trunk met her back with thick, rough bark. Low branches hung above. Nowhere to roll. Nowhere to dodge.
An apple hung at the edge of her vision, fat and bright; calm.
Cobeah snatched it from the tender branch and hurled it point-blank into the hood where a face should have been. It burst. Chunks sprayed. Juice splattered across warded cloth.

Before the assassin could react, Cobeah threw a quoit after the apple.

The disc flew true and buried itself deep in the shrouded hood. Blood poured from the darkness before the body crumpled to the ground.

Her survival instincts eased, just enough for fury to flood in behind them. Pure rage at being hunted like a wild animal by anyone willing to jeopardize the realm in an attempt to remove her when it could least afford weakness.

“Who are you?” she asked the corpse, and her voice sounded like it belonged to a different kind of storm. “And which of the many assholes trying to disrupt my reign sent you after me?”

Morvin flattens her back against the hefty trunk, eyes closed as the clunk and clatter of metal splitting cobbles draws closer. One beat. A second. A third.

A few more steps, it'll be on her position. This was a lousy hiding spot to start with. And with this behemoth on her tail?

That cold bark against his back as he leant against it, heart beating in that rushing thick blood... His hand grazed his gun, the scent of the tree in that foggy air, that fog sticking to his lungs, his heartbeat echoing the steps... closer... close... Sliding his hand on the gun's cold

Val’s breath came in gasps which he worked to swallow down. The bark of the tree dug into his back as Val leaned against it for support. He had spotted someone out of the corner of his eye, slinking along behind him in the darkness of the forest. He had slipped behind a tree as
