Average early October highs in SW Montana are in the upper 50s & lower 60s, but we'll keep unseasonable 70s through Friday. Real autumn will return with a vengeance, with highs dropping 30-40 degrees this weekend & rain turning to snow!

We've had abundant sunshine and unseasonable warmth in Montana recently! We'll keep that Wednesday and Thursday, but the wind will pick up Friday and temperatures will rapidly fall this weekend with rain turning to snow! Autumn returns!

This unseasonable fall warmth of the last few days isn't finished yet in southwest Montana. We will have a mostly sunny to sunny Wednesday with most highs in the 70s! Don't get used to it, though... REAL autumn will return soon!

3100m Christmas Lake from 3230m, so dry.research ice patch edge, the 6000 year old timber exposed. brief summer warmth then nudged treeline up 200m. we are well past that now, this one may hold out 5-10 yrs. (r). surprised to see relative warmth the past month bring up a few Forget Me Nots other side of ridge from this ice patch (l). wind-sheltered and some heat from the rocks on sunny days.the large long patch below the swamp Chevy. went a little in that gap. newly exposed ground in there, thousands of years. ooze/mud. the rocks behind Sundance are newly exposed, ice smoothed.the larger patch not too far from the 1947 swamp Chevrolet. this is a very long patch 150m easy. Ceaseless strong SW-NW winds late OCT-APR sweep whatever ❄️ falls on the plateau, settling lee side of favorable ridges. forming these, this one faces NE, cool slope.

Beautiful fall colors… expecting snow here Sunday

The Smith River curves between golden banks, its blue surface textured by overlapping ripples and small flashes of sunlight. Along the right shore, the current meets a sloping outcrop of gray rock, its fractured layers descending directly to the water. Yellowing grasses fringe the stone, while slender reddish stems rise from the near bank. Around the bend, dense stands of streamside shrubs carry autumn colors from green to bright yellow and muted ocher. Their rounded crowns follow the river’s course, marking a lush corridor beneath the drier hills. Dark conifers gather on the lower slopes and in the folds of the terrain, opening into scattered trees across the tawny ridgeline. Pale rock ledges interrupt the forest, their angled faces catching the light. Under a clear blue sky, the scene brings together the distinct textures of a Montana trout stream: broken water, grassy margins, weathered stone, and wooded slopes. The bend draws the eye upstream, where the river narrows between autumn brush and disappears behind the rocky bank.
