The huge oak tree with multiple trunks is in the background while a boardwalk with a wooden bench runs next to the tree. It's a lovely spot due to the dappled shade, a nice cool place to sit and rest (and listen to running water if there is any alongside the tree. A waterfall falls over the rocks when there is enough water, and a pool forms where all the brown leaves are located. There are some low green plants with long slender leaves, and a large plant (not sure if it's part of the oak tree) that is green and spread over the roots and would-be pool. At 1 am this little guy was chased out of its nest by a predator and fell 12’ onto the brick patio. I put it in a box in my shed overnight and next morning I returned it to the nest. More in alt

A gray dove fledgling is lying in a nest of twigs and pine needles on an oak branch. It’s surrounded by green leaves and small branches. My daughter Emily was up late around 1 am writing in the porch and heard a loud rustling in the oak tree when she saw a baby bird fall to the brick patio and a large animal (maybe a possum) scampering along the oak branch of the nest. She woke me up to help her examine the bird and see if it was hurt, but couldn’t find anything wrong. We put it in a box with some soft rags and put it in the shed. In the morning the fledgling seamed fine. I got the extension ladder out and put it back in the nest as the mother was nearby calling for it. A few days later it was learning to fly.

This hiking location might be my 3rd favorite place to hike. After rain, there is a small waterfall and pool, as well as a bench to sit on to enjoy.

A huge, multi-trunk oak tree spreads its long branches out over the hiking trail. The twisted and curved branched are visible throughout the image, with one coming right towards the camera, so it is up close in the upper right corner. There are a lot of fallen brown leaves on the ground, and plants that are still green. Twisted and tangled roots of the tree wrap around rocks and through the ground. After rain, the rocks form a small waterfall, and the area with all the brown leaves is a pool. To my left (not visible) is a wooden bench to sit on and relax. A boardwalk (not visible) goes past this spot and serves as a bridge when water is present. Different colored lichen grow on the trunk, particularly one that is an aqua color. I love this spot. The European mantis is typically green or brown, but can also be shades of yellow, tan, gray or black.
This one was a lovely shade of green with edgings in orange and yellow.

A female European mantis (Mantis religiosa) on the siding of my house, looking at me with her large compound eyes. That’s actually a pseudopupil, which is an optical illusion, seen as the black spot looking back. They can turn their heads, 180°. They have 3-D vision that can detect motion against the background to help them locate prey.
