The view from this webcam can be changed by park staff and occasionally we will move it and provide a different aspect of the view from the St. Mary Visitor Center. We hope to be able to provide close views of the elk in the fall and winter, tighter views of the mountains, and occasionally people at the Entrance Station and in the Visitor Center. Thanks to the Glacier National Park Conservancy for their continued support of the park's webcam installations.

A glacier fills a valley, its pale gray ice sweeping in a broad curve from the distance down toward the foreground. The surface is streaked with long curving bands of dark rock debris that trace the ice's flow, and the lower foreground gives way to dark gray moraine and loose rubble. Inside a glacier cave, walls of ice curve overhead and down the left side of the frame in deep blues that darken into shadow. The ice is layered and translucent, streaked with fine bands of dark sediment. Daylight enters through an opening in the upper left, throwing a bright glow across a lower shelf of ice on the right, where a wet, uneven surface scattered with grit and meltwater catches the light and shines. The textures range from smooth polished ice to rougher debris-covered slopes.

To many visitors to the park, this view is their first introduction to the spectacular scenery of Glacier National Park. This iconic view from Apgar, at the foot of Lake McDonald, really shows what Glacier is all about...big glacially carved lakes, vast wild views of the high peaks along the Continental Divide, and the ever-changing forests that blanket much of the lower elevations. It's no wonder that for many people when they think of Glacier, they think of this view.
