For this week's #FridayFrills, #ootd is this 1947 Jaques Fath evening dress made of tulle, satin, and chiffon, making it extremely airy. Yet, the embroidered bodice is boned to provide structure. The contrast makes a gown that glides effortlessly across the floor. #Fashionhistory

There is a great deal of woodland nymph to this green 1930s Schiaparelli cloak, the texture of which appears to have moulded itself around the body like a mossy carapace. Where is she off to, hood shrouding her head and keeping the chill from her shoulders? @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

John Galliano’s 1996-1997 Dior debut challenged the era’s rigidity by infusing the house’s iconic tailoring with provocative, bias-cut silk. It remains a definitive pivot point where heritage luxury met modern, unlined languor. #FashionHistory

Sunny yellow was a very popular color in the 1920s and early 30s. Here's a very similar outfit, also by Patou, as seen in the March 1931 "McCall's" magazine.

Early autumn calls for a lightweight knit and this has been a longtime favourite of mine. Patou pioneered early casual wear and sportswear in the #1920s, incorporating style and function, here in some lemony shades @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Irish fashion designer Simone Rocha was born #OnThisDay in 1986. She designed this sculpted lace appliquéd corset embellished with silver hand-painted enamel poppies, worn over a silk tulle underdress, that model Adwoa Aboah wore to this year's Met Gala. #fashionhistory

#Ootd is this 1961-62 Chanel gold lame dress. The full skirt is created by through tight pleats on the waist that then flow over three organza petticoats. The glamor of the dress is contrasted with her more minimalistic and refined daywear. #Fashionhistory

Close up of the pleated fabric of the bodice. Apparently she generally did the pleating by hand. Extraordinary work.

Evening dress, Madame Grès, Paris, 1962

A repost of my favourite dress. The wrap of the bodice and its soft colours are intricate, but guide the eye rather than creating visual noise. The skirt's folds are so soft they seem to fall like rain. Incredible.

Museum photo of a full-length, sleeveless, Grecian-inspired, asymmetrical evening dress in pink, white and lavender. The fabric is silk jersey. The bodice is supported at the left shoulder only, and it is comprised of bands of different coloured, pleated fabric (about 10cm wide) that interlock with each other in a diagonal criss-cross down the bodice. These flow into the skirt folds, which continue the colour of each band down the length of the skirt.

#Ootd is this 1956 Dior bubble dress. The "bubble" is made from folding the hem back into itself, which with the volume of a Dior dress creates this little poof. The bow is also a main element of this masterpiece, reminding me of a 1700s bodice and petticoat. #fashionhistory

One of my first encounters with historic dress in the early 1990s was a gown similar to this, two bodices & one skirt to change its status from day to night. I remain fascinated by adaptability in dress. This is a late #1860s version of that ambition @jbrightcollection.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

When you have a party to go to but would actually rather be at home with a gin fizz and a good book, this #1930s primrose rayon satin is at once both chic and relaxed once you add the loose draped jacket. Bias cut, cowl necked and oozing glamour #goldsteinmuseum #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
