A woman stands suspended in the high, unforgiving midday sun of a cobblestone street, bearing a wooden crate perfectly balanced upon her head. Her silhouette is a study in quiet endurance, her patterned blouse and long skirt grounding her against the dusty incline of the cobblestone road. In her left hand, she holds a second, empty blue basin, a day at the markets has come to an end.
To her right, a motorized tuk-tuk retreats into the haze, its boxy frame dissolving into the overexposed glare that washes over the right side of the frame. The architecture rises in uneven, concrete tiers of balconies and shuttered storefronts, crisscrossed by a chaotic web of overhead power lines that slice the sky into geometric fragments. Another shot from that day in 2020 in Brooklyn Heights when the light was spectacular. This building is a carriage house, built in 1901, which seems a little late for a carriage house to me. Anyway, the carriage entrance was converted into a huge bay window, and it now serves as a big single-family home. A listing from 2025 put the rent at $19,000/month. This is the fanciest street in Brooklyn Heights, with a bunch of celebrities living in the condominiums one block away. There are a couple of signs protesting the construction they wanted to do on the BQE across the street, which I assume will be put back now that they announced that they want to do pretty much the same work again now.
