St. Markโ€™s Basilica was a living workshop in 1253, where Byzantine tradition met emerging Gothic ambition. Seeing those golden mosaics catch the Venetian light is a reminder that medieval craftsmanship was nothing short of magical. #ArtHistory #Venice

A View of Geneva, Switzerland

In 1854, #Ruskin sketched this corner of Geneva with just a few washes of colour and a remarkable eye for architectural detail. During that trip he also visited Interlaken, Thun, Lucerne, Chamonix, Lausanne & Fribourg.

#Watercolour #ArtHistory

Watercolour, pencil and ink drawing by John Ruskin showing a quiet urban view in Geneva, Switzerland. A group of closely packed historic buildings occupies the centre of the composition, featuring pale stone walls, pitched roofs and several small towers and chimneys. The architecture is rendered with fine pen lines and soft washes of cream, beige and grey, while touches of blue surround the upper buildings, suggesting distant landscape or sky. The foreground is lightly sketched with minimal detail, drawing attention to the clustered structures. Ruskin's precise observation of architectural forms contrasts with the atmospheric, unfinished edges of the scene. Signed and dated "Geneva/JR.1854" at lower right. Medium: pencil, pen and black ink with watercolour, heightened with white. Dimensions: 16.5 ร— 22.9 cm.

Majoliโ€™s Blueboys series is a rumination on illness, loss, and history via images born of liberation, an attempt to locate and document a period when queer political and sexual identities became visible to a larger public.

October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories
KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1760 โ€“ 1849), โ€œOne Hundred Ghost Stores in a Haunted Houseโ€, c. 1790. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts USA.
Story in ALT.
#arthistory #art #Hokusai #GhostStories

Remember sitting around a campfire at night and telling ghost stories to scare your friends? Well, in the Edo period (17th to 19th century) the Japanese had a similar activity called โ€œHyakumonogtari kaidankaiโ€ in which participants told scary stories in a circle lit by one hundred candles. One candle was extinguished for each story told, and each extinguished candle was supposed to open a supernatural channel that allowed spirits to return to the living world. And if you are a fan of Japanese horror stories and movies, you are well aware that Japanese ghost stories can be quite frightening and very gory. Hokusai (yes, the same artist who gave us the wonderful โ€œGreat Wave of Kanagawaโ€ woodblock print) also produced a series of yurei-zu prints of ghosts (we will see some of those in this monthโ€™s theme). โ€œOne Hundred Ghost Stories in a Haunted Houseโ€ is a print showing a house filled with beasts, phantoms and demons, presumably summoned by the seated men playing the ghost story game. Hokusai, it turns out, was fascinated by the supernatural world.

The horizon is not a line. It is a slow surrender of color, and the painter who draws it sharp has never truly looked.

Albrecht Dรผrer painted Adam and Eve in 1507, pausing the biblical story before its consequences arrive. That pause changes the scene from a lesson about guilt into a question about choice. Do you feel hope or dread in that suspended moment?
