Oh, I adore using hidden motives. All my books have several hidden motives in play for the MCs: old secrets, vows they made to themselves, multiple agendas & more.

However, I'm not so hyped abt using unreliable narrators. (Mostly that's a skill issue.)

Yep~ A lot of it is trying to figure out the secrets under the surface, both in the present and the past. Sometimes the characters think they know the truth, but don't.

And some of the enemies play with this--like with Orkus taunting Emily about what he knows about her past,

I prefer hidden motives less as a trick and more as a source of pressure.

In QUEEN FOR A DAY, silence can protect people, preserve an ally’s judgment, or keep a frightened realm from tearing itself apart. We see the cost of Cobeah’s choices before they know why she made them.

“I sense you hunger for something other than food?” she asked, breaking the silence.

Aulay exhaled, a clear display of his frustrations. “I’m afraid to ask, but can’t stay silent.”

“So you too join the questioning ranks?” Her voice cracked with bitterness. “It’s no surprise. Everyone else wants their turn.”

“Can you blame me?” he replied, quick on the heels of her words.

“We have our duties, Aulay,” she tried. “Chantara needs us—”

“Spare me the pretense.” His midsentence interruption was far out of his character. “Neither of us are any good at it. What are you working toward? I know it’s not what others whisper.”

“There are things only a queen can know,” she replied, disgusted for echoing the same words Disaya spoke to her a few nights ago.

“Even you must hear how hollow that sounds.”

“I’m not asking for blind obedience; only a modicum of trust. You think my actions were without reason?”

“Oh, I know you have your reasons.” His laugh was mirthless as he replied with an ostentatious wave of his hand. “That’s what scares me. Nevertheless, I’m here to support our children. Besides, who else have you left to trust?”

The words hit like salt in a fresh wound. Crude, as always, but not wrong. She kept her face still, kept the crown from tilting with the weight of it, and swallowed down the sharp impulse to snap back what her grief wanted to say.

In Shadow Cursed, it's easy because it's first person. Until Kellem knows what's up, the reader doesn't know. Biases, assumptions, stubbornness are some of the drivers of the suspense and secrecy.

It's also a murder mystery. I am intentionally subverting things.🧵

#Sustember Hmm...sorta-kinda. You know 50% of it, not enough to understand the real meaning of it. Sometimes the reader knows but the characters don't. Most of the WIP has a some of my MC superheroes trying to get my MC vampire killed, but they also work together.

I don't use anything. My characters though... they come up with the wildest stuff. 🤣

Everybody has a hidden motive. Some don't even know it. That's true in "Hell Is Work" too.

I prefer biased narrators to unreliable ones. Everything is real, but their *perception* leads to a certain interpretation.

Mick and Virgil are both biased narrators.

#Sustember Absolutely! The motivations behind The Witch of Eden Hollow’s antagonist are muddied, with different characters knowing different pieces. And it takes a bit for these pieces to be revealed/come forward. When it all comes together, it blows all the characters’ minds (for the worse)

#Sustember 13!
I have the opposite, masked men that want to rip their masks off the first moment they can,
A blabber mouth character (Cole) who takes carnal pleasure from nearly leaking the bands secret identity and blowing the whole thing several times.

Amon does it absolute best to be a spooky

@amber-hathaway.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 1:22 PM

Absolutely! My novels generally have large casts, so you'd expect not everyone is going to be wholly honest about their intentions. Although I often clue the audience in eventually so they know what's coming while our MC remains unaware.

My #Sustember answer

I love unreliable narrators when they're done well. Sometimes I'll hide a character's motives, but never a POV character.

Do you use hidden motives in your work?

Unreliable narrators, buried leads, secrets that stop a character's tongue? 👀

A little late on this.
Book 4 of the Resist Series.

Several minutes went by before Rollan found recordings of one person’s idle chatter. They spoke with such fervor and pressure that their message was lost. The comments labeled them as an eccentric. They were right. Everything they released was accurate. Even their exposition on Rollan. A devil. He couldn’t find it in himself to disagree. His mistakes were out and open for all to see. For all to judge.
As they should.
They needed to know. These people weren’t being brought in with good intentions. This was imprisonment. With how heavily everything was being monitored, Rollan couldn’t risk posting or spreading the information. He had to figure out how to get out of the building. Frustrated, Rollan closed down the connection and buried his head in his hands.
“We will figure it out,” Alex said as he turned the chair around to face Rollan.
There was nothing to figure out. Rollan sighed heavily as his hands fell away from his face. It was exhausting to battle the crushing weight of the world every second of every day. Even at times like these, it was impossible to escape it. “Something is coming from Ivory City,” Rollan admitted. “Two unnamed things.”
Alex stared at him with growing disbelief. “What do you think it could be?”

Here's one of the suspense seeds I planted in No Sky Like Midnight, establishing that Leo has no real place to go in case of disaster.

A dark image with white text that reads:

He shoved away from the desk he was borrowing, in the only room that didn't stink of either torture or humans. The office view faced north, and from his vantage point on this high floor, the hills of Fairmount Park were a dust of dark green over shades of gray. On the peak furthest to the left, construction vehicles jerked and spit smoke despite the cold.
I should be out there building the new kelai, not mucking around in all this human garbage.
The worst part of being in Philadelphia was that the original Salaki kelai, the secret bunker that protected their clan in case of disaster, had been unearthed and destroyed during last year’s clan war. Centuries of history had been lost, and none of the other clans had suffered anything close to the same outrage. Knowing there was no kelai nearby was like someone had left a window open behind him, and he couldn't turn around to close it.
I hate this place. I hate this company. They ruined everything for the Salaki here.

Book 3 is called Wayward Stars, soooo... I had to go with a snippet from that >.>~

“Captain, wait,” Mark spoke up. Instead of focusing on his computer screen, he stared out the window with a frown on his face. “I think there’s something out there. It’s not responding to my S.O.S., but I think it’s… a ship?”
Emily squinted at the window, but all she found were the endless sprawl of stars. “I don’t see anything…”
“We don’t have time for guesses,” Seth said, holding his cape steady as it threatened to float wildly around him. “Mark, are you sure about this? If there’s no one out there, we could get lost—for good.”
When Mark hesitated, [redacted] reached over and tapped the screen. “Mark’s right. It was a small blip, but I saw it, too. There’s a ship nearby that doesn’t want to be found.”
