#SciArtSeptember Day 15 Honeycomb, I did a Mason Bee. This is a native pollinator to North America, unlike the honeybee probably invoked by the thought of honeycomb. A lot of native pollinators are solitary and don’t build hives.

Day 15 #SciArtSeptember: honeycomb. This detail of my #SciArt #embroidery, deep dilation (2025) features a honeycomb-like net to represent the stent in my iliac vein.

A pelvis, lumbar vertebrae, and part of the iliac vein are embroidered on white linen. Most of the iliac vein is outlined in grey-green stem stitch and the photo is focused on this area. A section on the left branch is a stent outlined in darker grey-green split stitch with some horizontal and crossing threads stretched across it. Intricate turbulence is stitched in single strand dark aquamarine backstitch within the iliac vein. The bones are stitched in thick backstitch in a white just slightly bluer than the white linen. Some text reading, “a single stem deep” is stitched to the right of the stent.

The Day 15 #sciArtSeptember prompt is honeycomb. This is a linocut showing one of the ways the honeybee communicates through dance. A worker bee can return to the hive and through the way it aligns itself with respect to the sun and the honeycomb, the waggles and loops of its movement convey 🧵

My linocut honeycomb pattern of hexagons in a gradient of dark to light honey yellow overprinted with 5 honeybees in black with red curving and zigzagging arrows between them to indicate their motions during a waggle dance (the honeybees bees in fact indicate a single bee at 5 points during its dance).
