Based upon the dream, fantasy, and other patterns of associations arising in his patients in psychoanalysis, Rank postulated a birth trauma, which he saw as a critical event in laying down in each of us particular patterns of thinking, motivation, and emotion for the rest of our lives. Notable among these prototypes was a feeling of a paradise once known but somehow lost, a separation anxiety caused by the separation at birth, and a resulting futile and lifelong struggle to re-unite with that golden age and that early beloved. …confronted, let alone “killed,” because it is affecting one second- handedly, the first and sometimes only response that one can make that is transcendent and is counter to the negative cycle of violence is to simply not participate. If one cannot be part of the solution, one can at least step outside of the arena where one is part of the problem. In showing such a running away from evil as being transcendent, creative, and even Divine, Robbins does in his novel what is being done, in a “right-handed” way, by the movie, Joe Versus the Volcano. For it is all about flipping the script from the one we know, whose ending is clearly evil. We at least have a chance that way.

In Part One of this book, “Being Shiva — Destroying and Creating Worlds,” I advance an argument based on taking a look at some assumptions we clearly do make and upon which we build all of our knowledge, our science, and our beliefs about what is real. It comes down to anthropocentrism, which is a species-centrism more disastrous for our understandings of trueness than any of the other centrisms — ethnocentrism, egocentrism, or any other.

In doing that I unveil the layers of reality construction upon which we construct that anthropocentrism. This is an epistemological undertaking, for in doing this the intent is, by pulling away the false pillars upon which we build our world, to find out what can be known instead: What might actually be true. What might give us surer footing from which to view our worlds.

In Part Two, “Transcending Worlds,” I begin to advance the notions that we might genuinely consider, once the false ones have been swept away. These are panoramas of understanding that open up once the curtain of anthropocentrism has been pulled to the side. We find a flourishing new world revealed. One that borders on wonder.

I point out that everything that we experience in life, beginning even before conception, before the coming together of sperm and ovum that created us, are learning experiences and are formative. They create imprints that skew all experiences coming afterward; they set templates within which everything that comes after is configured. They determine what we will see, how we will see it; how we will interpret it; what our reaction will be to it; and what we will do about it. We are human and have an experiential awareness extending back into a time prior to appearing on Earth. Then, in coming into Form, what we perceive and how we act are determined not so much by genetics but by prior experience.

Hence, these peri-conceptional experiences, these absolute earliest experiences of ours in the Form State, are the first of the Veils across our windows to the world, creating the screen upon which we will view our drama of human life.

So it is that our biological and anatomical makeup along with our individual histories prenatally and perinatally, beginning as early as when we were sperm and ova cells inside our parents, determine our human reality. They create the parameters of our experience in Form. They put down the ground rules of the board game of the human life we will experience and in which we will participate.

The problem is: #metaphysics is the #science of being as such - i.e. what is for an entity to be? It's a main branch of #philosophy.

Defining #categories or the different logical types of #being is one of the core questions of metaphysics. The mind/matter-question concerns their categories.

Are we sure that the way we chop up Reality into parts — separate things, separate beings, and so on — so that we might name them and analyze them separate from our perception of them is anything but a product of our biological programming? Does all possible perceptors see the world in terms of parts? How can we say that is the case? Perhaps, indeed, that separation of ourselves from Reality and dissecting of it is just some neurosis or illness ... some delusion ... that is particularly human to do so. Or at least that it is unique to humans.

But going off on that tack is jumping ahead. For this book will, indeed, take us there and past that point as well. In fact such considerations are specifically addressed in the chapter titled, “The Radical Rational View of Us And It,” Chapter 15. Hang on, and congratulations on your forethought, by the way.

Leslie Feher

Psychoanalysis, Birth, Cutting of Umbilical Cord, Separation Trauma

Leslie Feher (1980) sought to extend the Freudian tradition farther back into areas that, she asserts, were until only recently unknowable. Thus, she describes a natal theory and therapy that includes experiences of cutting the umbilical cord, birth, and even prebirth. In fact, she considers the cutting of the umbilical cord to be central in her theory of trauma, calling it the “crisis umbilicus,” and echoes Fodor in claiming that it is the true origin of the castration fears made so much of in psychoanalysis. This is so because, according to Feher, the cord and placenta is an object of security and is considered by the fetus to be part of him- or herself. Thus, this cutting represents a supreme threat in being a separation from a total life support system, a major organ, a part of oneself. In these ways, she also brings forward for renewed appreciation Rank’s speculations on the element of separation trauma as a crucial element of the birth trauma.

…correlated so that they can be proven to have intersubjective and/or replicatable validity. All of this despite the fact that within the “real rules” of the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm they have absolutely no possibility of existing or being able to happen.... Yet they do. Similarly, within the “real world” of “brute facts” related to biological survivability they seemingly find no place.... Yet we stumble over them.

If all of this were not enough, we find that these incorrigible facts provide more than a pathway to a glimpse outside our biological blinders, more than a puncture in our epistemological seal, and more than a transcendence of our biological paradigm. We find that this information from “outside” the table of our biological board game is less biologically useless than was thought from within the borders of that board game. We find, indeed, that our species’s assessment through natural selection of that which exists beyond it was less than perfect. We find that we are on the verge of re-evaluating that assessment and — to the extent it is possible and driven (once again) by biological survivability — of expanding our biological-cultural constructions to admit and give meaning to some of them.

Otto Rank — Psychoanalysis, Birth Trauma, Foundations of Personality and Some Myth, Separation Anxiety

Other early psychoanalysts disagreed with Freud on this. Otto Rank is the most notable of these. Following Freud’s basic psychoanalytic reasoning for personality patterns in early infancy, he asserted basic patterns of experience and ideas that are rooted in even earlier experience. Rank (1929) claimed the deepest, most fundamental patterns of these personality constructs originated at the time of birth, which Freud thought was not possible.

Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it, often suffering severe consequences of jail time, approbation, and worse? Is it more cowardly to lay one’s body on the gears of the infernal machine, as Mario Savio saw it?2 Or is it actually more cowardly to refuse to stand up for life, become an obedient soldier, and go along with the patriarchy, receiving all kinds of applause and reward for obeying it in the process and for the rest of one’s life?

At any rate, Tom Robbins, in his novel, opens the door to a new way of understanding heroism and cowardice — one which, as well, is most relevant to our current multicultural times. He shows that a true heroic approach is one that dares to do what no one has ever done: change the prevailing pattern, buck tradition, create a new cultural form — one more in line with reason, life, peace, love, and freedom from unnecessary suffering and brutality. In that, he may have been inspired by the Yippies and Abbie Hoffman during the Vietnam War. Robbins shows the “left hand” of the Tao of Funny God, if you will. That is, that it is certainly transcendent and powerful to confront evil and to not be caught up in it and to exemplify a loving, creative, and peaceful response.

…your stance — for such a stance in life — then you could easily go directly to the second half of the book, “Matter Is Message.” It is a long book, and I can understand some might want to do that, if only to cut down on their reading. I need mention this because I want all readers to know of the second part of the book and not to miss it. I consider it the most profound, inspirational, and relevant part for these times and the people living in it.

Still, I have constructed the book to be read front to back. It follows a logical order, creating a rational, thoroughgoing, and comprehensive vision, which the latter parts are that much sweeter by. I think you will miss out a little at least by skipping over the earlier chapters.

Whichever of these ways you read it, or some other way — perhaps you are one to have your dessert first and then get your meat and potatoes later, maybe to have dessert then again — my wish for you is that you receive the blessing of reading it with the same joy, and fun, in which I wrote it. I hope the reverence and gratitude I felt as it came through me is sensed by you as well.

…glories in the implications of them for understanding our Reality, our non- separation from each other, our Identity as Self and Divinity, and for guidance for our lives.

In so doing, we peer through a portal wherein we are again one with the Universe. We find ourselves on the edge of a coming together as grand as that which we experienced at conception. We receive the gift of a heritage we long ago and mistakenly repudiated — a worldview in which we are seen as belonging, at home, and once again noble within the world we inhabit.

The Biological Veil

In Book One, as well, I establish there are biologically constituted realities. These are one of the screens of distortion across our perception of clear Reality. That is to say that reality, for humans, is constructed for us out of our unique biological set from an infinity of everything possible that could be or is in the Universe — something that Aldous Huxley (1954) called, Mind at Large.
