We suggested this to UEL staff during the pandemic and did similar as a L&T Centre once a week, an informal space on Fridays. Not sure it worked for us as a team, however it did for academics and their students. Anything to humanise things. #LTHEChat

This! It's exactly the sort of case where talking & listening to individual students is a much more effective way to gather feedback & find out what's happening than any formal mechanisms #LTHEchat

Q4 - If a student travels an hour each way, what would make the day worth the journey?

A3 - Talk to the students in the class, those who may come to personal tutoring sessions or office hours & not in the class, to see what is happening. Send announcements alerting sessions link to the assessment - either in content or literacy, if the case may be. @columfromcork.bsky.social #LTHEChat

A3 We may take it personally, is it my teaching? We forget you can learn in other ways than being present in the same space. If the students get no other benefit from being in the room than seeing you talk, they might as well view a recording of the session. Make in person count. #LTHEChat

A3 for a small group, following up to see if there is a problem. But I do struggle with the how to get that message of why being in the room matters - looking for ideas :-) #LTHEchat

A3 #LTHEchat ideally we'd encourage a sense of involvement & hope that students can gain tangible benefits from attending in person. Something which we should do & is v hard in practice is to manage external factors whether they are mid-term blues, competing academic pressures, or social events

@dralison.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:29 PM

A3 - reasons are complex, and how are students engaged in the full learning experience? Can they engage even if they miss? What can we rethink about place based learning to maximise in person engagement? #LTHEChat

#LTHEChat A3 When we had an office it was full of joyful resources & a fridge, microwave, kettle and tea, coffee, biscuits. People would pop their heads round the door and something magical happened, even if it was just a happy tea and a chat. Booking to sit in silence at a workspace can't compete!

@santanuvasant.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:28 PM

A2 We may, as educators think they are not interested in our subjects, however, now more than ever, students work, have busy lives and may just want a break and an attention wipe. All of which aids learning. #LTHEChat

@suebecks.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:28 PM

A3 If a student missed two classes I'd reach out by email to see how they were. It was often because of work as ina changed shift allocated, caring responsbilitites or they were poorly #LTHEchat

@penarthkate.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:26 PM

A3 I don't take it as a judgement on my teaching - there'll be lots of other reasons students can't make my class.
Half the assessment for the module draws on collaborative work done in class, hopefully that highlights that being there in person does matter. #LTHEChat

A2 - student schedules are busy, many competing demands. Much more so than when I was a student #LTHEChat

A1 In the cafe with friends and also on MSN chat virtually (when to University in the early 2000s, pre-social media). #LTHEChat

#LTHEChat A3 It's wierd when we reward students by suggesting they not come in. With our various reading/enhancement weeks, we would hold exhibitions of student work, we would say when we would be in the canteen so they could find us for a chat. We wanted to show they mattered & being there counted

@abbis.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:26 PM

A3 #LTHEchat Why does being in the room matter? Could this be hybrid, recorded, caught up with asynchronously? If not, what's not being communicated or appreciated about the value of being in the room? Ask students what they'd show up for. What are they missing?

@martinrich106.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:25 PM

In some ways yes, because it meant reconsidering what tutorials were for & the level of engagement among students who made the effort to attend in these rather hostile circumstances was consistently high #LTHEchat . The pandemic taught us a lot about what can be done online

@dralison.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 7:25 PM

A1 - everywhere! Lots of conversions with peers! #LTHEChat
