In schools and churches, hotel rooms and nail salons, law firms and fried-fish shops; in cramped, dingy apartments and luxury, gated communities, the men, women, and children in American Hagwon struggle to find satisfaction and meaning in a world that seems to grow less forgiving with each passing year. Once comfortably middle class in Korea, John and Helen Koh and their three children—Bo, DH, and Mido—find their lives upended, first by a shocking betrayal by John’s oldest friend, then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Desperately striving to regain their footing, they leave Seoul for Sydney and eventually settle in Southern California—where new vistas of opportunity open up for the children as their parents, strangers in a strange land, must adjust to a new life in which their experience and education mean little, and they set their sights on whatever it takes to provide for their children’s futures. The Kohs, their friends, relatives, and even their foes move in and ou

What happens when the part of you that always answered back simply disappears? A parolee clearing his mother's house finds a childhood toy and loses the only self he ever mistook for whole. The weight, undivided.

Joyce Carol Oats said today that AI generated romance novels make ‘perfect sense’ because they are so formulaic (which they are). What do you think? What about other genres? #ai #writing #books #romance #literaryfiction

The trouble with an 8 book series is that you wonder if you will still be editing from the grave. Every day is a series of humiliations from the AI editor. It understands #LiteraryFiction well enough that it does not flag creative grammar. It knows the difference.

A novel is not Wikipedia. If your technical digression doesn't advance the plot or character arc, it is bloat. Why should readers wade through research dumps?

Just finished Should the Waters Take Us, Stephanie Soileau’s bittersweet, occasionally hilarious, elegy to Cajun history and culture, and the slow, inexorable extinction of Bayou Louisiana. Vraiment bien, cher!

Vincent is the beautiful bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star glass-and-cedar palace on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. New York financier Jonathan Alkaitis owns the hotel. When he passes Vincent his card with a tip, it's the beginning of their life together. That same day, a hooded figure scrawls a note on the windowed wall of the hotel: 'Why don't you swallow broken glass.' Leon Prevant, a shipping executive for a company called Neptune-Avramidis, sees the note from the hotel bar and is shaken to his core. Thirteen years later Vincent mysteriously disappears from the deck of a Neptune-Avramidis ship.

Weaving together the lives of these characters, Emily St. John Mandel's The Glass Hotel moves between the ship, the towers of Manhattan, and the wilderness of remote British Columbia, painting a breathtaking picture of greed and guilt, fantasy and delusion, art and the ghosts of our pasts.
