School visits are one of my favorite things about being an author!! I love the big, multi-class assembly-style presentations, the small-group workshops, the Q&A sessions, table meet-and-greets on book fair nights... Any time I get to be in the school with the readers is a good time! #KidLitChat

I can easily imagine the writers not being willing to be vetted. Especially if they were visiting without pay. I know I'd probably balk, unless there was a compelling reason to visit, like a staff member or student from my family. #kidlitchat

This is ridiculous and everyone In education knows it!
When I was in grad school (for education) I had a professor who said “weighing a pig every week isn’t what makes them grow” meaning testing isn’t teaching and doesn’t make them better learners. #kidlitchat

Doing the classes also scratches that itch to be teaching. I don't get it often, but I do once in a while! #kidlitchat

The fear of inappropriate content is why my admin said the district would have to meet and "vet" any author I brought in. An extra visit months in advance? It was too much to ask the author who volunteered to visit without charge. #kidlitchat

I'm with you. I love small group presentations. And, I'll admit it, if I'm presenting in a gym or multipurpose room, I always ask for a techsavvy helper. Teacher, kid, coach, whatever #kidlitchat

I used to work in a school library and we hosted a lot of author visits. I got it down to a science on the librarIan end, but I get nervous thinking about when it will be my turn!

Yep. I'm a retired middle school ELA teacher, and I much prefer to chat with a class than to do something in an auditorium. I don't love that at all. I'd rather the kids have a chance to participate. #kidlitchat

The best school visit was when a former student who had left our school & no one knew where he went turned up 3 years later in a classroom where I was presenting! 🥹
