@penamerica.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:25 PM

For #BannedBooksWeek 2026, PEN America spoke with Stephana Ferrell, a public school parent and co-founder of @flfreedomread.bsky.social.

Here, she gives us her view from Florida and explains how you can take action alongside the Florida Freedom to Read Project: pen.org/stephana-fer...

Photo of Stephana Ferrell, Florida Freedom to Read Project and quote by her that discusses the challenges of accountability at the state level and acknowledges colleagues as heroes. The image includes the Pen America and Florida Freedom to Read Project logos.

I know we're at the tail end of #BannedBooksWeek but this is the first chance I had to venture out so these should keep me going for a bit... Once I've finished reading Witchland.

"I grew up in Wisconsin, in a town so small we had no stoplights," writes @charlesjensen.bsky.social. "It was isolated intellectually and culturally. The nearest bookstore and movie theater were almost 20 miles away... What my hometown did have was a library" pen.org/no-small-tow... #BannedBooksWeek

Photo of PEN America Los Angeles director Charlie Jensen, above a quote that says: "It is against the grain of every American ideal for someone else to determine what I can read – or what you can read, based on narrow, ideological, preferences, or viewpoints." PEN America logo appears at bottom right.

Unpopular opinion: Don't read my books.

Read BANNED BOOKS instead.

It's still #BannedBooksWeek, and we have a few suggestions about how you can observe it: https://myumi.ch/jVeyj

As we near the end of Banned Books Weeks, we wondered who is challenging books?

The American Library Association put together a graph showing censorship by the numbers.

What do you think? 🤔 📚

#BannedBooksWeek #LetBooksBe #LetFreedomReadDay #Booksky

Censorship by the numbers. Who challenges books. Nearly 92% of censorship attempts in 2025 were initiated by pressure groups swayed by them. This marks a 20-point increase of 2024. Donut chart. 40% board and administration. 31% elected officials and government. 21% pressure groups. 4% other or unknown. 3% parents. 1% patrons.

@polari.pressOct 9, 2026, 5:16 PM

As we come to the end of @bannedbooksweek.bsky.social having just released the new edition of Erased by James McDermott, there's something wonderful/special/ironic(?) about publishing a poetry pamphlet where it's the homophobia that's "banned" from the book: polari.press/erased
#BannedBooksWeek

Three books fanned out against a grey background. The books are bright pink and centred text in block capitals is written ERASED and beneath JAMES McDERMOTT. But each word has a strikethrough across it making it harder to read.

As it's #BannedBooksWeek, a photo courtesy of a customer who last night attended the opera adapted from Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary. Easy to joke that it's a bit "Down With This Sort of Thing" but it illustrates that there's still a strong, active conservative element in Irish society.
