@carolinavonkampen.comShow you're an essential part of the content process by talking with readers, writers, content producers.
@carolinavonkampen.comYou need to be familiar with the AI products that when clients ask about it, you can say, "Here's why I don't use them."

@carolinavonkampen.com@acesediting.bsky.social just released a research study on the value of editing. Use this study to prove the value of #editing to bosses, management, clients, etc.!
Also, talk about what can go wrong if content isn't edited.
@carolinavonkampen.comRevel in what you do as an editor! 😍
@carolinavonkampen.comReveal to real meaning behind words. If the gov bans words, get to the deeper meaning:
health equity —> fair and equal access to healthcare
marginalized —> kept from accessing resources
culturally responsive —> informed by [group's] unique culture
underserved —> undersupported
@carolinavonkampen.comRebrand! If "editor" means "glorified spellcheck program" to the people you want to hire you, rebrand yourself to talk about:
✔️ Communications/Writing Specialist
✔️ Compliance and Quality Expert
✔️ Content Manager
✔️ Publications Specialist
@carolinavonkampen.comAre you being pushed by clients to use ChatGPT for editing? Look up research on how well it can actually "edit." (Hint: Not well!)
Keep a work journal and write down everything you do. (Kelly Schrank's checklists could provide this!)
Know what you can do!
@carolinavonkampen.comWhen we edit, we bring our whole selves to the #language loop. Because we do that and because we love words and language, we are keeping language moving.
@carolinavonkampen.comAll LLMs can do is produce a string of words most likely to appear in that order.
They cannot innovate linguistically the way humans do!

@carolinavonkampen.comAI "editing" products lack curiosity.
Human editors are very curious! We love to learn!
Contrary to the stereotype, editors are not grumpy grammar snobs!
@editrix-rachel.bsky.social"AI can never give a writer empathy." -Kory Stamper
I feel this in my bones. From being a copyeditor for almost a decade, I can sense what a writer is trying to accomplish, what they are worried about, what they feel nervous about.
@carolinavonkampen.comAt heart, what we do as editors is facilitate communication, and communication is about people.
Editors are people people.
(This is not a joke slide, @korystamper.bsky.social clarifies! LOL!)
@carolinavonkampen.comEditor is not about rules: It's about communication.
Editing is not about imposing rules; it's about communicating!
@carolinavonkampen.comEditors aren't a bridge between the #writer and the audience.
Editors are the human in the loop, to borrow a quote from "the enemy, AI." 😂
@korystamper.bsky.social means this literally: Editors are the human in the content cycle (researching, writing, revising, reading).
@carolinavonkampen.comTo non-editors, the work of editing seems technical to the point of being almost mechanical—and given the general misconception that editing is “just fixing bad grammar and typos,” it’s no wonder that some people think editing can be fully automated.
@carolinavonkampen.comTime for the #ACESVCON26 keynote by @korystamper.bsky.social, "Human in the Loop." 👏
@bulletproofwriting.bsky.socialWe've got a #ACESVCON26 discussion thread going about professional development books too!
