One of the common complaints about downtown Victoria is that the parkades are full. I've been collecting data on that since July 24. Here's what I found! #yyj #parking www.boomin-in-victoria.ca/2026/10/the-...

From the old Hansard Archives - exploiting immigrant and youth labour. A proud BC tradition.

A clipping from the Hansard Archives of BC.

TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 6, 1954
'Gypo' Labor Used In BC, House Told
VICTORIA - (CP) - The case of "gypos" who employ immigrants on construction projects has been brought up in the Legislature.
Robert Strachan (CCF - Cowichan-Newcastle) said during debate on the estimates of the department of labor immigrants were being hired on a contract basis by some persons in Victoria and were receiving less money than workers receive under an hourly wage.
He said the workers on contract receive less money, no workmen's compensation and no unemployment insurance and safety measures long fought for by labor are not followed.
Mr. Strachan said the board of industrial relations needs a "new approach" to protect the workers. It was spending too much of its time protecting employers.
Later the member charged some employers were hiring apprentices to get cheap labor, not to train young people. He and Bert Price (SC - Vancouver-Burrard) said there were not enough apprentices now.

When things are a lot,
I send a gentle breeze with
gently-falling leaves. πŸŒ²πŸ’š

This haiku is brought to you by my #yyj #positivitree. Haaaaaappy Saturday! =)

Photo of a treetop in front of a blue sky. In the sky, a haiku:

"When things are a lot,
I send a gentle breeze with
gently-falling leaves."

Just above the centre tree, a speech bubble with the words, "Haaaaaappy Saturday!"
