#StillDoinCDs Alton Rubin Jr. from Lafayette, Louisiana, is the accordion-virtuoso son of a francophone Creole accordion-virtuoso dad, Alton Rubin Sr., who played as Rockin’ Dopsie (pron. Doopsie). The junior Dopsie’s 1995 début album “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” featured his dad’s Creole-bluesy hits.

Cover has a broad yellow-ochre border with the title info surrounding a slanted photo showing an accordion player stretched out on a garden divan (bamboo and wicker) on a zigzagging zebra striped mat between black & white, striped pillows (plus one gold one). He’s wearing dark glasses, a white cowboy hat, and a stagey black suit with white-dotted jacket. He’s a black guy, 30s, with moustache.

#StillDoinCDs Strike is a strongly punk-influenced Brazilian rock band from Minas Gerais, south of São Paulo. Desvio de Conduta (Misconduct) was their 2007 1st album of 4 so far. The joyously punky outing went platinum with 3 top-10 singles. One track became a telenovela (1-season TV series) theme.

Cover shows a Norrh American type electrical wall outlet affixed on a wall. It had messy dried white paint smears and globs on the plastic facing.

#StillDoinCDs The “Best of the Year” rack in the Princes Street HMV shop in Edinburgh potlached me a copy of the 2026 Adam Lambert outing, called “Adam.” The gay superstar’s sterling mercury voice soars through an ever-more-satisfying range from near-dubstep to dance to rock. Biggest in Australia.

The 30-something singer appears as if transformed into a silver, geometric robot, still with his human face.

#StillDoinCDs Guitarist Mike McKenna & puckish songwriter Joe Mendelson, later Mendelson Joe, formed a blues band, McKenna Mendelson Mainline, in Toronto, & generated a major hit début album while touring in the UK. “Stink” (1969) rambled with skill through a range of blues modes.

Cover simply has the band name, a horizontal line, and the album name in some sort of thick-lettered designer script, very late 60s type thing.

#StillDoinCDs “Heaven :x: Hell” was released by Sum 41 as their 8th album & grand finale in 2024: disc 1/2 (“Heaven”) is a return to punk-pop roots including gold single “Landmines,” & disc 2/2 (“Hell”) rejoins the metallic heavy mode of the band’s recent albums. Critics raved.

Two magic doorways stand leading into another dimension on either side of a seashore scene. One doorway, blue & luminous on the sunny side of the seascape, seems heavenly, while its counterpart on the red ominous sunset side of the scene seems hellish, as if you’d be stepping into flames to go through.

#StillDoinCDs If you wonder whether blues-rock can sound fully up-to-date these days, Colin James’s “Chasing the Sun” (2024) makes the persuasive case. Other Canadian & US roots illuminati like Colin Linden, Tom Wilson & the venerable Charlie Musselwhite contribute to this all-round feast.

A trim and short-white-bearded middle aged guy, still pretty young looking really, is seen in portrait wearing something much like a jean jacket and running his hand into his abundant (I’m so jealous) hair.

#StillDoinCDs Vol. 17 of The Imbayakunas’ 20 albums, 2013’s “Andean Soul,” is mostly instrumental, featuring a mix of, yes, Andean songs with titles in Spanish or Kichwa, plus plenty of pan flute & other trad instruments. At the end, there’s a sterling vocal version of Lambada!

A young indigenous Andean man plays pan flute. Behind him against a black background is an artistically flaming Inca-style golden sun mask, with a central boss showing three peaked mountains.

#StillDoinCDs A gay UBC friend in 1972 when this Vaughan Williams powerhouse conducted by Sir Neville Marriner came out reviewed it as “music for eternity.” “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” is melody taking off into a quantum field, & “The Lark Ascending” is a dream flight. CD 1985.

The cover shows a painting by John Constable called “The Valley of the Stour with Dedham in the Distance.” There’s a slow, small river in the foreground crossed by a horse and foot bridge of some 6 pillars, with a small house and outbuildings at either end. In the middle distance the river winds by, course mostly visible via the trees growing on its bank in an area otherwise composed of green fields. Far behind to the right are the clustered, peaked roofs of an 18th century town, with a prominent four-cornered church tower.

#StillDoinCDs Richard Ashcroft from
Wigan, Lancashire, formerly of the Verve, is a fine songwriter but also a famous adapter of samples. On 7th album “Lovin’ You,” (2025), lead single “Lover” uses a Joan Armatrading bit, & 2nd single “Lovin’ You” brilliantly channels “Classical Gas.”

A red sunset scene on a broad sea beach features a hatted man waving an acoustic guitar over his head as several families walk toward the waterline in the red reflection on the wave-washed sand,

#StillDoinCDs The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was partly engineered by rock&roll vibrations from East Berlin bands, & Engerling (‘chafer beetle grub’ - a Beatles pun?) was one of the most popular. I got 1997’s Komm Vor (COME ON) at a concert in 2001: great Doorsy blues-rock.
