#PPOD: This fragment of the Hillsborough meteorite crashed through the roof of a New Jersey home in 2024, delivering an unusually pristine sample of a primitive asteroid directly to Earth. The rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite contains material altered by ancient salty fluids... 🧪 🔭

Close-up of a meteorite specimen with a silvery, crinkled metallic crust draped over darker, porous rock, highlighting contrasting textures and a reflective sheen.

#PPOD: This sprawling Hubble view captures N44, a vast star-forming complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud, about 160,000 light-years from Earth. At its heart is a superbubble roughly 210 by 140 light-years across... 🧪 🔭

A dense field of stars fills the image, surrounded by wispy clouds of gas and dust. Pale blue and grey nebulosity forms an intricate web across the scene, with darker clouds of dust concentrated towards the lower right. Numerous bright stars appear in shades of blue, white and orange.

#PPOD: Eight dust devils march across the dark sands of Ganges Chasma in this remarkable view from the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Sunlight warms the dark, gently sloping surface, driving convection in the thin Martian atmosphere... 🧪 🔭

Series of grainy gray and orange panels showing a bright circular plume or ring with a long dark tail across a textured surface, showing eight separate dust devils on the surface of Mars. The five in orange are enhanced colors.

#PPOD: Saturn has long been famous for the enormous hexagonal atmospheric pattern surrounding its north pole. Now, observations from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have revealed another geometric surprise: a giant, 10-sided wave, or decagon, encircling the planet’s south pole. 🧪 🔭

Saturn with its tilted rings visible at left and a false-color close-up of the planet’s south polar vortex at right (dashed circle marks the pole), dated August 29, 2025.

#PPOD: On August 28, 2026, the Moon slipped deep into Earth’s shadow during a partial lunar eclipse visible across much of the Americas, western Europe, and western Africa. At maximum eclipse, 96.3% of the lunar disk was immersed in Earth’s umbra, leaving only a slender portion illuminated. 🧪 🔭

Full moon centered in a dark night sky, its pale light breaking through swirling clouds and casting a moody blue-gray halo.

#PPOD: A Snowy Day in the Atacama ❄️

Snow blankets Cerro Armazones in Chile’s normally dry Atacama Desert as low clouds surround the dome of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope.

A drone captured the unusual scene on August 19. 🧪 🔭
