#PositConf2026 All the keynotes were good but the improvised final keynote was a special treat. I read that Houston was hot but the Hilton conference area felt like it was above the Arctic Circle. The enthusiastic presenters and attendees warmed my heart. And I had a lot of nice chats.

Ahhh, no more looping through The Design of Everyday Things at 2x to prep for my talk! It's a good book, but it definitely getting to be a bit annoying 🙃 #PositConf2026

The audio book "the design of everyday things" in the audible player, set at 2x playback speed. Currently 39 minutes into the book, with 5 hours remaining at 2x.

Dammit my stbl hex stickers that I meant to mention in my talk and make available in the room are still in my pocket. Grab me after the closing if you want one! They look like this #PositConf2026 #RShiny

A stack of hex stickers for the stbl R package. They look like the name of the package carved into stone.

I made it through my #PositConf2026 talk! The Design of Everyday #RStats Functions. Slides here: stbl.wrangle.zone/slides/every...

The AI/LLM sesh at #positconf2026 was actually a banger… if anything I am taking away the lesson that if AI is indeed gonna be generating all of this text, our job as humans should be to PREP, READ, & CORRECT as aggressively as possible.. some new tools are already on the way to letting us do that

Not @healthandstats.bsky.social finally demystifying what a "skill" is in the last talk of #positconf2026, after it's been mentioned in 1000 times in the last 2 days, and I kept nodding and smiling like "oh yes I definitely know what that is". 😅

Tyson Barrett ( @healthandstats.bsky.social ) shared some useful tips on things to add to a CLAUDE.md file or a skills file in his "Teach Once Use Often: Building AI Skills for Data Analysis" #PositConf2026 talk. Slides:

A zoomed dark panel highlights text from CLAUDE.md:

# Make Errors Visible

Never drop NAs
Create checks after any major data step
Do not change the data to pass a check without asking.
Don’t overwrite raw data.
Don’t delete files or outputs without asking.
When updating a file, create a backup so no other changes get lost.

Style choices = trust

Styling in Quarto = actually pretty easy

Heck yeah.

Hot take: being on your laptop while someone’s giving a talk is rude.

I get some folks have to multi task for work, but I literally saw someone watching a movie clip during a talk.

From @mcmullarkey.bsky.social at #positconf2026: {blendtutor} for popping up R/python exercises with AI-driven feedback!

Love the hyper minimal YAML structure to create simple exercises.

This is a working example
1 Lesson name: "Hello, blendtutor"
2 Language: R
3 exercise:
type: "Function writing"
5
prompt: /
WriteR code that prints "hello" success_criteria: /
- Prints exactly the word "hello"
12m_ evaluation_prompt: /
Grade a beginner R exercise: print "hello"
The student submitted: {student_code}

This talk by @tigertang.bsky.social is my favorite of #positconf2026 so far, and is going in my "instant classics" pile:

tigertang.org/posit_2026/

It's a super clear, actionable framework for how learning happens and how AI can be used to help not hinder. ✨

loved @liomys.mx hand drawn slides at #PositConf2026 a breath of fresh air after so many AI art slides

@smachlis.bsky.socialSep 16, 2026, 3:12 PM

I've known for awhile that software development has changed dramatically in the era of AI, but to hear @wesmckinney.com say "I think I'm done writing code" was still kind of jarring.
