Lovely background for this song. I particularly like the phrasing in this. #placenames

What a delightful little song and it's lovely to include London and lots of places within it in our #placenames

"The Beaver Island Boys", attributed to Dan Malloy, Roud 2238, sung here by Duane Starcher.

AKA "Lost on Lake Michigan" AKA "The Gallagher Boys"

The disaster was in 1873, Ivan Walton collected it from John Malloy in 1932.

Many have covered this well known song (Roud 1083) but I am sharing Kirsty’s version ( The lovely Kirsty is one of my folk song/singing tutors)
This song was collected by Percy Grainger.
(I lived in Brigg for many years too!)

A personal favourite. A delightful tale in a song and many #placenames mentioned

We'll move over to Yarmouth for this next song. Lots of variants on this but this was collected in Middlesbrough, where I went to school. Great singing from the Young Tradition. #placenames

Believed to have originated as a London broadside but found in many places. An excellent version but my favourite is by Hedy West. #placenames

Up to Scotland for this next one. I was a great fan of the JSD Band in their day, although they apparently still have reunions as recently as last month. Love the drama. #placenames

It's definitely debatable whether this is Yorkshire or Sussex but it doesn't take away from an excellent song from a lovely duo. #placenames

Back to Yorkshire for this beautiful song collected by Bob Copper. Personally, I'm not a fan of John Martyn's style but I'll let you make your own mind up. #placenames

I had to look up where Bruton is and found it in Somerset. Excellent singing from Jon Boden as well. #placenames

An interesting example of how a song develops from a poem and then is given a tune, a chorus and the words adapted so it is now insinuating itself into the tradition. A veritable tour of Yorkshire and fabulous singing - what a voice! #placenames
