This is exactly analogous to the way, when we are fetuses, the nurturing elements of the mother’s womb “turn off,” in the last stage of gestation, making the womb quite an uncomfortable place indeed. We see him pushing his face against the elastic, membrane surface of the rhino’s posterior in a way graphically suggesting perinatal emergence. The tourists watching this explicitly state that they see it as the rhino giving birth. We witness the actual “birth”: Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura) struggles to make the opening larger and to come out. However, scientists and the educated public are not supposed to be like that. It is our job to be looking squarely into the face of these forces of denial and potential apocalypse and to be seeking to understand the human condition and human psychology in light of them. It is our duty then to inform the rest of us about what we see so that we might have a chance of reversing our self-destructive tendencies. Whether the educated public and the multitude of scholars actually are fulfilling their mission in these times is debatable. Just prior to his death in the early eighties, he wrote a culmination of his thirty-year investigation into pre- and perinatal influence in two works titled Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling and The First Trimester. In these works he goes beyond his other works (for example, 1966) in placing the roots of all later experience, and in particular, distress, at the first three months of physical existence. Lake began his investigation of re-experience in 1954. Like Stanislav Grof, he did this using LSD, initially, in the psycholytic therapy that was being developed at that time to facilitate therapeutic abreaction.

Economics to Piss on You I pondered, is it funny, or horrible, that I had been making money hand over fist as I kept shorting the market, buying only puts, having fully expected this crash ever since Bush had put in his tax-cuts-for- the-rich policy in his first year of office?3 I expected this crash to come near the end of the W’s second term, like had happened to Reagan who had employed the same asinine throw-money-at-the-rich policy. Clearly, with our planet on the brink of worldwide ecocide, and our species permitting an odd hara- kiri of itself — for no reason other than being truly demented about the major things of life, like survival — there is something awry in who we have become. How else do we explain our modern materialistic and consumer-oriented style of being that would value drinking out of plastic bottles, even as it contributes to the deaths of our children? How did we become “suicidal ape”?3 Indeed we find there are factors arising of our evolution that have compelled us to turn on our own existence. Furthermore, those devel- opments have determined our status as the philosophical ape, forever uncertain of our status in Nature, our role in the Universal scheme, and the optimal activities of human life. Our fall from grace has made us varied, confused, and trying to figure it out, as well as humanicidal. Yet we were not always that way. We were planetmates once, too, and we participated in a natural not cultural stream of events. However, from that Edenal time there was a step-by-step descent from that state of grace till we arrive at our situation of industrial civilization today. There were developments that increased our split from Nature. It happened over time, gradually, imperceptibly. APOCALYPSE AND INSANITY Page 14 …attention, put out, published, and promulgated by the best scientists of our time, mixed in with the more mundane messages of our daily newspapers and nightly newscasts, though we mostly turn our ears from them. Still, you are aware of them, else you would not have this book in your hands right now. There are other types of folks, however, the ones who will never see a book like this. There will always be those that will have their heads in the sand and will be cast about like flotsam upon the waters by the events swirling around them — impotent in the face of them and dependent upon other’s actions for the result. If you are one, know we’re trying to save you, too. Assuming you are not one of them — a good bet, if you are reading this — there is much to say about the current apocalyptic trends. But even those of us aware of this crisis hardly think of it. Of course it is our normal psychic defenses that operate to keep this huge awareness out of our daily minds. We must do this in order to be able to function. But perhaps, for some of us, our defenses work too well — so much so that we unthinkingly participate in and contribute to our own demise. This is classic neurotic self-sabotaging, self-destruction on a macro scale.

In his descriptions of the levels of experience and the matrices of perinatal experience, Grof has provided useful maps of the unconscious and experience in nonordinary states, which have incredible heuristic value in our understanding of cross-cultural religious and spiritual experience, psychopathology, personal growth, and consciousness and personality in general. And they have been utilized successfully in providing a context and guide for many tens of thousands of participants in his psycholytic and holotropic therapies. However, while Grof is exhaustive in his descriptions of fetal and perinatal experience, he says less about the earlier experiences in the womb — the first trimester — and even less about conception and the experiences of sperm and egg — what is known as cellular consciousness. Still, this area is beginning to be discussed among his followers. And through his current nondrug modality, called holotropic breathwork, people are accessing these areas and beginning to give word to them (e.g., Carter, 1993). FALLS FROM GRACE Page 22

This also sheds light on the seemingly “mindless” violence and rage that is directed back against anonymous people and society in general by certain types of criminals. They can be seen to be acting out their “fuck you” welcome into the world by attacking back and outwardly, rather than this early rage energy being channeled into some of the other, more healing or at least not harmful, responses possible to early assault. We see the differences in male and female tendencies in that regard even today. First of all, however, throughout our history this extra assistance needed by mothers has pushed for single male-female units — monogamy — with exceptions to the contrary pushing through only occasionally and to various degrees in only some cul- tures, but if so, especially among the well-to-do in those societies. For in some societies, men with excess resources have the luxury of time for such dalliances, the resources to facilitate them, along with, importantly, the power to keep from being pressured by others in the group to do otherwise and to be like the rest in the group, for example, through moralizing. They are above such restrictions as falls upon the rest of their group, and in such a situation, we see the tendencies of men to manifest as they would. The point is we have polygamy and polyandry as human potentials, but polygamy — that is, one man with two or more women — vastly trumps polyandry in terms of its occurrence. Furthermore, and just ask any woman, it is the man who is more likely to cheat. That is more than just a complaint or criticism from women, it is actually the case, statistically, and in virtually all cultures. This elderly obviously seasoned personality seemed to balloon out several sizes of his suit in his sheer incomprehension and his near perfect confusion. Still, raising his voicing, a little more squeaky and almost embarrassed, puffer-fish guy held forth, as if written on tablets, first, how “all the traders have lost money” and then, “Nobody’s doing okay.... .” But his afterthought hit me like a spear: He pleaded, “I mean who last year at this time foresaw anything like this coming.... I mean,” he said “anything at all, at all, like this coming up?” At home, there was no way to restrain the howl of laughter that last comment triggered in me. This is an evolution which I deem to be a devolution from our natural state and our fundamental self within Nature. A devolution which has gotten us into such a complicated and confusing state on the proper way to be in life ... and the worthwhile things to do ... as to require such a book as this.2 For we find that our fall from grace in Nature, leaving us forever after uncertain of our proper place within it or the optimal trajectory of a human as opposed to a planetmate life, began when we were still apes — prehomonids is the usual way of saying it — and still living harmoniously with the rest of the world. So yes, we are starting at the real beginning — not just of you, but of our species — for insight into and a foundation upon which to construct the most fulfilling and unshakeable of identities, the most authentic of selves, the happiest and most ecstatic of life journeys, and the most satisfying and purposive of things to do in life. Clearly, with our planet on the brink of worldwide ecocide, and our species permitting an odd hara- kiri of itself — for no reason other than being truly demented about the major things of life, like survival — there is something awry in who we have become.

Need I mention the continuing explosion of the world’s population leading to likely famine, wars, diseases, and so on? We have twice as many people alive now as the combined total of all humans who have ever lived! Yet right-wingers are perennially on the attack against Planned Parenthood, here in the United States. We are no different from bacteria who overrun their petri dish only to die off. We certainly aren’t showing ourselves to be any smarter than that. How about the possibility of virulent epidemic that cannot be cured? Strains of micro-organisms are evolving that are immune to our much- touted antibiotics. But why go on? If you are not aware of these things, you are from some other planet. If you are dismissing these facts, you are in actual psychological denial of your dire situation. If you are not paying attention, you are spending your life desperately running away. No, I will not dwell on the measurements and technical data to drive home my points.
