#TheDragonblood: There are board games in Nemoria. They're played for fun between friends. There aren't really any competitions or gambling. Magic adds too many ways to cheat.

There are plenty of board games popularized post LeQuin war. A common one is called Panacea. An eidosian board game that teaches children the importance of healing (1/2)

Going to hop in because I actually have a chess game in The Wolf Knight. You see The Dream of Rhonabwy, is about a man's fever dream where King Arthur laments the state of Wales while playing "chess".

I'll share an excerpt actually!

An excerpt from The Wolf Knight (Raven & Bear: 8) by Bramble.

Transcript:
“I was wondering actually,” Princess Ceindrych began this match with a patient opener, “P., to d-four. Marrok told me why he wants to be a paladin, but what about you Princess Ata?”

The answer proved unconventional. A pawn pushed to h-five and silence. Thereafter, each established tactic was met by dubious plays. Clouded eyes hurried around their board, then glared at Ata in a bratty fashion. This older princess sighed as she realised it had only been a game of strategy for one of them. Unable to recall where each piece sat, her opponent blushed from embarrassment and hid behind that large cushion again.

They sat in awkward silence, until Ata offered an apology. Muffled by this pillow, Princess Ceindrych explained she had memorized sequences of moves but struggled to recall their board in detail. Small raindrops gathered at the corners of that cloudy stare. Both girls jumped when Sir Garrett cleared his throat, then proposed for this princess to remind herself.

He tapped a rook where it stood, “like so. While your grace studies the board, Princess Ata can answer your question.”

“If I must,” Ata smiled as this girl gingerly felt through their pieces before she explained, “I was quiet because in truth I have little choice, given how the vassals of my mother object to me.”

“That may have changed too,” gloved fingers rubbed the scar hidden under a grass-blue blindfold, “bards sing of your exploits. The druids respect you. So, their heirs regard you with respect.”

“B. to f-six,” Princess Ceindrych interjected with a small smirk when it captured a knight, “many think you may become a worthy steward of the land and a great leader for its people.”

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: Gambling, however, is illegal in the Tithriki Administrstive Expanse. Like romantic relationships and eating in public, it wasn’t until first contact that Tithrik learned of betting. (Today, going on a dinner date is of course legal, if you’re one of THOSE kinds of people.)

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: During Tithrik’s early pluralistic period, the Subadministrative for Interspecies Tolerance promoted a three-player version of Many-Tokens that centuries later is the only one people still play.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: An archetypical Tithriki game, Many-Tokens, lends its name and strategies to metaphor and poetry. Many-tokens is turn-based and uses cells on a grid, similar to the human game checkers. Once a two-player game, that version would be unrecognizable to modern Tithriki gamers.

Chess, checkers and shogi all exist within the world of Theryl. Chess was created in Elux and was transformed into checkers by Urgaians since traditional pieces were more difficult to make in the desert empire. Chess has become extremely popular in Vienta and Dhesa.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: Notably, without thumbs, manipulating small objects may be difficult for very young and old Tithriki alike. In particular, as they grow steadily throughout their lives, elderly Pellin-Tithrik tend to be too large to play without plotting rods to manipulate their pieces.

#OctoberWorldbuilders 9: Tithriki board games are generally played with many, many game pieces rather than dice and tokens. Chess and Go would be easily recognizable to them. Candyland would not.

There aren't many board games yet -- it's a bronze age world and only a few have been developed. The popular local board game is similar to mancala, played with stones going around the board and collecting pieces in a goal at the end of the board.

@mplbooks.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:46 PM

AElitians play a game similar to chess in which the pieces have specific movement rules and the goal is to capture as many of the opposing "army" as possible. D'robeans play mostly dice and card games but do have a game most of us would liken to backgammon.

Day 9

There would be no boardgames in the Hunting Grounds, but Desi loves horror games like Mansions of Madness and Betrayal at House on the Hill. (I love those games too!)

Thanks @kiraofthewind.com

October Worldbuilders hosted by Kira of the Wind. Each day of the month is listed with its theme. Today is the ninth, and the theme is board games in your book's world.

Roberto lives in the modern world; it's basically an alternate version of our world and the board games are mostly the same, but Roberto only enjoys chess. His vampire senses make it so he can't quite predict his opponent's next move but close!!

No laughing at my poor GIMP skills from the past! 😅

Raiders & Mammoth is a game I came up with for the setting that serves several purposes, not least of which is to intone that early racecourse games like Senet may have come to us from Neanderthal freinds. 🧵1/8

A game-board of Raiders & Mammoth as it appeared in earlier iterations of my story. The board vaguely resembles a mammoth's head where the course starts at the tip of the trunk, moves up the head, around the ear, across the faces, around the other ear, down the face and out the tip of the trunk again. Cowrie shells are the game pieces in this version.

I think Chess certainly exists in the game world. Some games, such as this old game called Stratego, may not exist, but they would have some functional counterpart in the Hero's Edge.

Games like Clue, for example, most 🧵
