Anyway this is a Polish film set in Samogitia (Žemaitėjė), the "lowlands" of Lithuania, and made during communist rule.

Žemaitėjė wasn't Christianized till the 15th century, after 200 years fighting off the Teutonic Knights. It was the last place in Europe to be Christianized.
