I used "mysterious" a lot in this WIP. Guess it comes with the whole "writing about phantom thieves" territory. Here's a snip from when Leo did his first thievery.

#LGBTQWriteAThon

The gallery was at the very top of a seven story building, south of Market St., and looked gorgeous, decorated in soft pastels and fairy lights. If it wasn’t for the fact that I was getting ready to ransack it, it’d be a place I’d take Adrienne. She’d always liked art.
	I sighed.
The police were already there, surrounding the building and ready to turn me into Swiss cheese at a moment’s notice. The same detective I’d seen on the news was pacing around and tugging at his hair.
Even a bunch of journalists and newscasters were there. Was it really that interesting that I was going to steal a piece of art? Maybe it was just the whole “mysterious phantom thief who no one knows the true name of” thing whipping everyone up into a frenzy.
“So… how are you going to do this?” Void asked.
“I’m gonna climb the fire escape of a nearby building, transform, fly over, nab ‘The Mask of Eternity,’ then get the fuck out of dodge.”
They clicked their tongue. Huh. Didn’t even know they had a tongue to click.
“Sounds like a plan. It’s 10:54 now, so you better get on it.”
	“Right.”
I ducked into a nearby side street, jumped and grabbed the edge of the fire escape, then ran up the stairs. I panted lightly after I got to the top—but now I had a good view.
Void was right, there wasn’t any hardcore security, like lasers or something like that. Just a few security guards. I could probably get in through the roof if I really squeezed myself. If I’d been, well, me, I could have fit through the vent easily, but as Veilwhisper, it’d be a tight squeeze.
I pulled the coin out of my pocket, held it to my chest, then cried, “Power of the Phantom Veil! Give me strength!”
And just like always, everything happened, then nothing happened. I gently landed on the concrete roof, my shoes clicking against the top of the building. My wings were already out. I took a deep breath. Lysander and Void were right. I could do this.

#LGBTQWriteAThon Oct 11: A snippet wherein I researched the history of the word "file" as relates to information to ensure conceptual availability, discovering that it comes from Latin filum via Old French filer, "to string documents on a thread or wire for preservation or reference".

There was one advantage to the oddity that had befallen him becoming the stuff of market gossip: it encouraged others to share stories of magical mishaps from their own homelands. None were as spectacular as getting inexplicably transported across a long distance—or as tragic as Pechet—but some were worth noting. Mysterious travelers, livestock running mad, springs drying up overnight. One tale of an orchard withering in a season of plenty bore troubling resemblance to the blighted grove Rhiann had discovered.

Each of these, Lycus filed on a string in his mind—and each one made him more eager to get back to Fort Mossyna, where he could leverage his own power base to learn more.

This is the closest I get to something "mysterious" in the random new wip inspired by the coat I shared the other day.

One hand holding his chin between thumb and knuckle, the other grinding the chains into his back, Beryl pulled him into a kiss that was tantalizingly gentle, waiting until a whine of pleasure parted his lips to put out a tongue, teasing him with a taste so delicate it was mostly breath.

“I hate to remove the chains,” Beryl tightened his hold on Corrin even more, “when the feel of them excites you so.”

“Who are you?” Corrin gasped, his eyes closed, his weight leaning entirely against a man he was certain he’d never met but seemed to know him so well.

Beryl pulled his chin to the side and bowed to bite his ear. “Does it matter, just now?”

From A Harvest of the Heart!
Felix's anxiety is starting to get the better of him...

As the torches were lit around the town center, casting the cat-squirrel effigy in mysterious shadows, Felix’s heart was a rock at the bottom of his belly. He hadn’t found Henry yet and Henry hadn’t found him. Felix tried to tell himself that Henry was just as busy as he was, surrounded by people with harvest gifts, but an evil little voice in the back of his mind kept whispering that Henry had decided Felix wasn’t worth the trouble.

#LGBTQWriteAThon Okay but why is it always Garrot?

He is an enigma to all...

‘Besides, Marko could be into polyamory, you never know.’
‘I’m not hungry anymore. Sorry, Amara,’ Charleen announced, before pushing her plate aside and leaving the room. Shit.
	‘Polyarmory?’ Garrot asked, mishearing entirely.
‘Polyamory.’ Amara was quick to correct him, though she was clearly having a headache as she pinched her nose and closed her eyes, looking pained.
	‘Yes, polyarmory. Wielding multiple weapons.’
‘Garrot, I don’t think you have any idea on what we’re talking about. Multiple partners, not multiple weapons.’
‘Multiple partners sounds like my personal brand of hell.’
	‘Glad to assist.’
‘You know something, Garrot?’ I chimed in, ‘You are a mystery to us all.’ Garrot smiled a wide, toothy grin, as if to say he did his job well.

I know it's 'line' share and not 'big snippet' share, but I wanted to share a little more meat than just some dialogue.

#LGBTQWriteAThon #queerwriters

A snippet of In Your Afterglow.
"Fine. We do some more searching. You can head to the library, and I'll… go to the graveyard or something. People keep mentioning mysterious deaths, so might as well find out if that's true. And," You shoot them a well-meaning glare, "I'm not sulking."

They chuckle, and put some extra force into their kick. The rock flies down the sidewalk, further than before. Bouncing off a bump, the trajectory redirects into the road. As the rock clatters against the pavement, the siren of a police car whoops once.

[Image description: fall decor including Jack o lanterns and bats on a soft orange background]"You brought me to a rave? Is this some kind of sick joke, Mikheil?"

Mikheil chuckled as he fluffed the lapel of his long trenchcoat, the fabric swaying in the humid breeze. "Be patient, for there is a purpose to being here. "

"If the purpose is an acid induced nightmare, then we've come to the right place." Just as that exited my lips, a girl with sleeves full of beads sauntered up and ran her black fingernails over my chest. I snarled at her and she laughed, knocking her head back to allow her hair to spill from her furry cat ear headband.

Had to pick a “mysterious” from my actual MYSTERY!😂😅

Talia gives the reader a quick tutorial on US antiquities laws…

… which wont be relevant outside this early chapter… obviously...🤷‍♀️

marveling at its beauty, though not entirely sure what she was looking for.
“I’d like to show it to a friend of mine. Would you permit me to take this over—”
Dr. Lloyd was already shaking her head. “Oh, I’m sorry, it can’t leave the premises right now, but your friend can come down and see it while we still have it.”
It had been worth a shot. The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 was meant to discourage looting of historic and prehistoric sites, graves, and other archaeological treasures. Talia was all too familiar with ARPA, and that it meant any artifacts or remains collected from protected sites were considered government property. Tampering with or stealing these objects was a federal offense.
Being found on park premises meant the knife was, for the time being, government property, just like any other artifact. In her role as a representative of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Dr. Lloyd had become the mysterious object’s temporary custodian. That was, at least, until it was officially established that it wasn’t an artifact relevant to the location in which it was found, which seemed likely to both of them.
“Of course.”

Zilla stared at the radiograph on her display, watching the cloud in the lungs spread deeper and deeper with each breath the girl took. "Why is she in an open ward?" Zilla asked, fighting to keep her tone even.

"Why wouldn't she be? Shadrach healed her."

I have exactly one hit for myster* in 1661, so for #LGBTQWriteAThon I'll share this paragraph from chapter 1, Alexander's journey from town to country.

When again the curtain fell, he imagined what he could not see: the grey-green of flat Middlesex starting to rise slowly through pasture and yellow heath, great sleeping hornbeams turning to fingers of pale birch. At which mile the landscape ruled by Father Thames would give way to the hill and wood where he had been bred, he could only guess; he’d last made this journey age three, when he only barely had the facility of memory. How he would be received back into that land was just as much a mystery. His mother believed that all would be well—their neighbours had changed, the villagers scattered, their county turned upside-down the same as all the rest during the late troubles—if they’d made it this far without being challenged, the rest’d be plain-sailing. But if he thought too much of how he’d been dressed when he left Buckinghamshire twelve years ago, Alexander—who never suffered coach-sickness—nevertheless began to feel a little queasy.

'So they'd have magical contraband coming out their ears; they'd have to call the wizards. "But what happened in there?"'

A fire, a vampire attack, illegal magic, a heap of bodies. The first question of the book a lot of people are trying to solve.

#LGBTQWriteAThon D11: Lines! I don't have the prompt, and it is a mystery, so vibes might be spoilers.

So, last line I wrote:

"In that case," Grace said, "I'll get the car ready. I think we're going to take a little trip."

Mysteriously, the word "mysterious" isn't in Paranormal Activity Club, but instead in Dylan & Zephyr's Guide to Love & Magic:

Long before we were boyfriends who play tonsil hockey like it’s a competitive sport, Zephyr was the mysterious bad boy and I was the class clown.

Pretty okay. I'm in the trenches of revising/editing some challenging scenes which is...well, challenging.

It's also getting to the dark time here which 🫤

But I also got out for a hike on an absolutely perfect day with a friend and our dogs so one of my month goals ✅

photo of a mountain landscape in autumn. There is green and red moss in the foreground, a small lake in the middle, and taller mountains in the background. There is light clouds and sun

I didn't write as much as I wanted to, but I DID do a finished piece of art (which will get revealed later in the month) and I made the BYMMS book trailer! So overall a success, I'd say.

I had a good week overall. I finished drafting Hunted and Called on Monday and later in the week pulled out my old notes with Elisabeti to start going over and prepping to start writing soon.
