Liz's reaction to Jane agreeing to a first date.

The relief she felt was apparent, as the breath she had held captive within her chest quickly escaped her. A hopeful smile replaced her nervous glances. “Got a reservation at six, so you have plenty of time.”

“A reservation? That’s a bit assumptious, isn’t it? What if I had said no?”

She gave a weak chortle. “Backup plan was to take Spiral, and have her ease my disappointment. Glad I don’t have to, she’s not a cheap date.”

“Oh? You think I’m a cheap date? Must I remind you that I’m an actual princess?”

Her smile vanished. But as she quickly tried to clarify herself, I cut her off. “I’m just teasing. If you’re going to get to know the real me, then you should get used to it.”

She stared for a moment in surprise, before a small smirk rose on her cheek. “I’ll see you at six.”

Just as I began drumming my fingers on the railing, someone, Payne by the sound of his voice, called out from the bow, “Eyes starboard!”

“How many?”

“Um…four…no, maybe five?” Payne calls but didn’t sound sure and I frowned.

I looked towards him to gauge his position on the deck and where he was looking and called out, “Adeola.”

Our sharpshooter, a gorgeous lanky woman from Botswana, nodded once and sprinted through the rain to Payne’s side, raising her ridiculously long rifle and peering down its scope. A second later, she called, “Counting five. Maybe a killy an’ a half out.”

“Shot?” I inquired.

A beat, then Adeola replied, “Nah, no shot. They’ve people with ‘em.”

Beanie and I shared a glance. “Pitits?” I asked in response.

Another tense beat and Adeola called, “Nah, they look grown. One of ‘em’s carrying bags.”

“Delivery,” Beanie said, and I gave him a terse nod. They were early this year.

“Hey.” It was the guy talking. With reluctance, Ceres turned her gaze away from Vola and to the mouthbreather in front of her. He was skinnier up close. Paler. The kind of guy you’d find listening to headphones in the park, playing chess with himself. If she’d ever needed proof she was a lesbian, this was it. Right now, his bland features were contorted in a mask of irritation. “So, thanks for apologizing and for buying another drink - but we were in the middle of a conversation…” he trailed off, clearly expecting her to take the hint.

Again, she angled her body towards the girl, subtly away from him. “Oh, cool, about what?”

Ceres finished her friend’s drink, setting it back on the counter with a definitive tap. “Nope. I trust you.”

The lines of Ahn-Me’s face relaxed just a little bit at the vote of confidence. “Deal.”

Ceres glanced down at her own shirt and adjusted her cleavage. Ran her fingers through her hair. Pinched her cheeks in the bar’s mirror. “Without a mess, you said?”

Ahn-Me arched an eyebrow at Ceres’ primping. “If you can.”

“Please, it’s me,” she tossed over her shoulder.

“That’s what I’m afraid of, Shark Girl!”
