Two independent paths converged on the same system governing sleep and wakefulness: Masashi Yanagisawa found that lack of orexin causes #narcolepsy in mice, while Emmanuel Mignot of Stanford Medicine mapped the dog narcolepsy gene to orexin receptor-2: https://ow.ly/iMsf50ZLA1n

What happens when someone has hemophilia A? The absence of a protein called Factor VIII causes uncontrolled bleeding when injured.

🧪So 2026 Lasker Award winners developed the bispecific antibody emicizumab, which mimics Factor VIII & restores clotting capacity: https://ow.ly/tpJl50ZNuQ8
#Lasker2026

"Plugging the gap": Factor VIII normally brings Factor IXa and Factor X together on the activated platelet surface, which contains the phospholipid phosphatidylserine (top). F-IXa then activates F-X to produce F-Xa, which stimulates other blood-borne components to form a clot. In hemophilia A (middle), the absence of F-VIII causes uncontrolled bleeding. The bispecific antibody emicizumab mimics F-VIII and restores clotting capacity. Protein structures were rendered using the Protein Imager web interface (Tomasello G, Armenia I, and Molla G. Bioinformatics. 2020; 36, 2909–2911). Illustration: Heather B. McDonald

“Reimagination begins with existing ideas and envisions them in a new way that creates innovative possibilities. Reinvention, in contrast, breaks completely with existing ideas and produces something radically new from the ground up,” Lasker Jury Chair Joseph L. Goldstein writes for #Lasker2026. 🧪
