Good morning. A beautiful Small Heath butterfly seen feeding on the wild Calluna heather last week... it must have been a late brood as the butterfly was looking nice and fresh! πŸ“·οΈ 🌿 🧑

Happy new week everyone! πŸ•ŠοΈ πŸ‘‹

Also under Little Ouse-Brandon Bank Iron Bridge, impressive communal web of Grey Cross Spiders (Larinioides sclopetarius). Delighted by tiny Hydra hitching ride on Ear Pond-Snail (Radix auricularia). Sadly, plenty holes of alien #invasivespecies Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). #invert

Fun watching these two Small Copper butterflies just now. The male in hot pursuit of the female, fluttering his wings at her but she wasn't ready! He wouldn't give up, while she carried on feeding he then kept sneaking up behind her! 😁 🧑 πŸ“·οΈ 🌿

Happy Friday πŸ•ŠοΈ

#FlyDay #Scape #UKWildlife #Invert #ECK

A photograph of two Small Copper butterflies seen on a purple aster flower under soft, natural sunlight. The flower is positioned slightly to the left of the centre, angled toward the upper right. Its numerous long, slender, lavender-purple petals radiate outward from a dense yellow centre. The two butterflies are perched on the right side of the flower's centre. The upper butterfly a female faces the top left and is seen feeding. Her forewings display a striking, fiery orange colour patterned with bold, irregular black spots, all framed by a thick, dark charcoal-grey border. Her hindwings are dark charcoal-grey with a scalloped, bright orange band tracing the lower edge. The lower male butterfly rests just below and to the right of her facing the upper left in profile. His wings are partially closed, showing a similar pattern. The entire scene is set against a completely blurred, soft-focus background of bright green and yellowish foliage.

Did you know that Iceland has ~4,970km of coastline that experiences daily tide change? Check out what critters and fish are there at low tide!

In The King's Forest, #Suffolk Brecks, on Saturday we saw 2-3 v active Clouded Yellow (Colias crocea) #butterflies, a rather tattered Green-veined White (Pieris napi) still being attractive to a ♂️, Small Heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) & a dead Black Snail Beetle (Phosphuga atrata). #invert #butterfly

Light and dark always seem to find their perfect balance in nature... a beautiful Red Admiral butterfly feeding on the last few remaining blooms of Veronica in our garden. πŸ“·οΈ πŸ–€ 🀍

Besides a Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi), here's a Common Northern Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum). This fragile being phosphoresces at night & the larger individuals can be found as deep as 1km. The sea at Mill Bay #Salcombe #Devon on 25 June was 18Β°C, air 24. #ctenophore #ctenophores #invert

It's #MacroMonday

Here's two critters...

- Spider (unsure of name, species).
- Dragonfly, Carolna Saddlebags I think.

#Dragonfly #Nature #UKWildlife #Invert #ECK

Spider walking along a watery swampy section. Almost translucent limbs and body, author not sure of species description. Was seen foraging at a local favorite spot for birding.Dragonfly, left profile, perched at the end of a long reed stalk. Wings almost horizontal, abdomen bent holding tail downwards away from wings. Possibly an example of a Carolina Saddlebag dragonfly.

For #MacroMonday A lovely Southern Hawker in our garden yesterday... after hunting, she weaved herself into a shrub before hanging under a leaf to avoid detection... took me a while to find her! 😊 πŸ“·οΈ 🌿

Wishing everyone a good day and new week ahead πŸ‘‹

#Dragonfly #Nature #UKWildlife #Invert #ECK

A close-up photograph of a female Southern Hawker dragonfly that is seen clinging beneath a leaf, hidden within an Elaeagnus shrub. She is in side profile with her head slightly shaded by the leaf but the light otherwise catching the corner of its eye and body. The dragonfly is well camouflaged with her patterned brown and light blue abdomen, translucent veined wings, and greenish head blending in with her surroundings. The leaves of the shrub blur out into a soft green-brown background behind her.

At Blackpool Sands, excited to see my 1st UK Painted #Gobies (Pomatoschistus pictus); a handsome fish. But saw few European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) on the #Devon coast in June. Atlantic Beadlet Anemone (Actinia equina) course in evidence & a few Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis). #invert #goby

Moult aggregations of young Spiny Spider #Crabs (Maja brachydactyla) are now more common on UK's SW coast as this #crab increases in abundance, perhaps due to the warming ocean. They can span 1 m at final adult moult age 2-3 years, descend to 750m & occur as far N as Scotland. #crustacean #invert

Another astonishment at Blackpool Sands #Devon on 27 June was vast congregation of Spiny Spider Crabs (Maja brachydactyla) at base of cliffs, having migrated from deeper water to moult; safety in numbers, newly moulted individuals sheltered in centre of the group. #crustacean #crab #crabs #invert

#Crustaceans at Elberry Cove included European Edible Crab (Cancer pagurus), Rockpool Prawn (Palaemon elegans) & Northern Acorn Barnacle (Semibalanus balanoides). Also a lovely Snakelocks Anemone (Anemonia viridis). #UKWildlife #UKNature #MarineLife #crustacean #crab #nature #wildlife #crabs #invert
