An hour later, I got a call from my wife saying please come, MY mother is dying. She did, 3 days later.

This is a bare-throated tiger-heron from Costa Rica. This exotic looking heron was actually stalking along a boat-dock early one morning. They are quite large and wide-spread in Central America.
