For #TidesOutTuesday, I’ve seldom seen #sunsets as lovely as those in the #Galapagos. #travel #photography #ECK

The sun is setting over gently lapping waves, bathing everything in light orange. There is a dark ribbon of cloud stretching across the sky.

On this day in 1835, Charles Darwin arrived in the Galapagos Islands aboard the HMS Beagle. His observations of the unique wildlife there would ultimately change science forever, inspiring his ground breaking theory of evolution.

Similar to the Large Tree-Finch but with a shorter, stubbier bill, the Small Tree-Finch is arguably the most common Camaryhnchus species, the so-called tree-finches. Here are two views, one with the black bill (sign of breeding plumage) and one with a yellow bill (non-breeding).

AB has given #Herons&Egrets as today’s #BirdOfTheDay challenge. Living in Florida, I photograph these guys all the time (and never get tired of it!), but I decided to reach a little farther afield for this determined-looking #LavaHeron. #travel #Galapagos #birds #WildlifePhotography #ECK

A squat charcoal gray bird hiked across rough black lava rock. It has wind blown feathers, long yellow legs, a long black beak, and a yellow eye.

The Vulnerable Large Tree-Finch was, at least in my experience, one of the more difficult species to see and is considered Vulnerable to extinction. I only saw this species at elevation in the moist tropical forest of Santa Cruz & Isabela, though they occur on other large islands too.

Woodpecker Finch is famous for using cactus spike or twig as a tool, but that is difficult to observe. I often saw them hanging downward & probing with their long bill (hence name “woodpecker finch”). #birds #Galapagos
