…poisoning and torture — in modern times, since this womb experience of the fetus is affected by the food and drugs the mother takes in and the emotions she experiences while carrying the child. With our times seeing manyfold increases of toxic chemicals from both our environment (287 industrial pollutants were found in the umbilical cords of newborn babies, in a recent study, of which two- thirds of them are known to be carcinogenic and toxic to the brain5) and from our current rampant pharmaceutical usage, this movie reflects the more likely womb of modern prenates.

So, again, Terry Gilliam, creator of Brazil, known for his work in Monty Python, depicts a more recent biological experience for humans — a toxic womb here, which is in addition to the unnatural cesarean-type birth mentioned. It fits that this dystopic nightmare of a world as seen in Brazil, reflecting as it does the worst of our modern reality, would be revealing some of its roots as being in the most horrifying and most unnatural of our experiences in the womb and at birth, which are particularly significant in modern times.

Risking It All

At any rate, the ensuing plot in Joe Versus the Volcano has provocative elements containing cornucopias of meaning. It shows Joe having to decide whether to sacrifice his newly won relationship with his anima ally — that is to say, the heroine, Patricia — for the benefit of an entire — but anonymous — community. This demonstrates that at a progressed level of the spiritual process — that having to do with one’s inter-connection with the larger community of living things, not just one’s personal unconscious — one must risk even one’s newly regained creativity, inner child playfulness, and personal feelings, that is to say, one’s anima. One might even lose one’s confidence, doubt oneself, question oneself, lose one’s self-esteem ... all one’s good “therapy” is threatened ... all the gains one made at earlier, egoic levels, where one gained pride and self-confidence are put at risk. All that one thought one gained in becoming the adult one is might be lost. The better, more integrated Ego, proud even of its gains of self as in incorporating the anima, is more than at risk; it must be let go of. No, in this greater task one will risk suffering again ... and on a deeper level and in a more profound way ... but there is the very real promise that it will at least be more meaningful and more transformative.

Womb (dome) has become more like birth canal or cesarean opening. And from that opening above him, rappelling on ropes, descend the cavalry.

On a related note, the rescuers descending on ropes ... relief via ropes or cords ... is symbolic of the neonate’s wishes for life-saving oxygen to be coming more abundantly through the umbilical cord. As we will see, being trapped and feeling tortured and suffocated because of a reduced flow of oxygen-carrying blood through the umbilical cord is a near universal human experience and is a major aspect of human’s uniquely-configured prenatal and birth experiences, out of which the singular human personality and human worldview emanate.3

At any rate, being in the dome is symbolic of the stage in the birth process before birth when one is in the womb; it is termed by Grof, Basic Perinatal Matrix I or BPM I. Whereas this time in one’s life can be blissful and contented and was more likely to be that way for people, historically, it can also contain elements of torture and poisoning.4 Sadly, it is more likely to have those negative elements —

…out his perinatal rebirth and the release from his stifling outer existence. While Sam is actually being tortured to the edge of death, which happens while he is strapped into a chair much like one from a dentist’s office, in which he squirms and struggles to move, which is set in the center of a huge, dome-like, womb-like enclosure; in his imagination only (we find out later) his allies burst in to free him. The dome, we only then discover (or is it wishful thinking? Some kind of deus ... or obstetrician ... ex machina?), is open at the top and the supposed “terrorist” team, who he is wrongly accused of working with, descends on ropes in order to free him.

I will forgo, for now, the issue of the acceleration of cesarean birthing procedures in modern times and its contribution to a degrading societal consciousness and global mood, as I have touched on that elsewhere in a more suitable context.2 However I need at least to point out the unmistakable cesarean element in this “birth” (this rescue) through an opening magically appearing in the dome (womb). Where the dome was dimly lit and seemed completely enclosed, suddenly there are lights shining from above onto the face of a startled and squinting Sam. Looking up, he sees a huge hole at the top of the dome, the building now appearing to have more of a shape of the inside of a nuclear cooling tower. Womb (dome) has become more like birth canal or cesarean opening. And from that opening above him, rappelling on ropes, descend the cavalry.

Similarly, the many horror films ending in a burning inferno, which typically brings down the building or house and often, tellingly, sinks below the ground in doing so, are depicting an eruption of perinatal material — horror that is too pervasive to be avoided.

The Ends and the Means

Meanwhile, in Joe Versus the Volcano, the ending is clearer about the properly creative response. In the request to Joe — which he accepts, by the way— to jump into the volcano, which would keep it from erupting and thus save the people of the island, Joe is asked to give up his life to save an entire community, not merely to risk his life to rescue his anima, his feeling self (his feminine, creative, intuitive, playful, loving, humorous, emotional self). He is asked to separate himself and his intentions from any possibility of success. Like the Turkish and Occupy protesters, it is the style, the mode, the means of action, not the ends, which are all important. And any foreseeable gains have to do with what will be accomplished in terms of one’s character and nobility of self, by acting honorably, against all odds…

…that results in the uniting with anima energy, which is symbolically the saving of the “damsel,” in this case played by Meg Ryan. So earlier on there is a dealing with psychodynamic energy. One must be brave, and of course that part is learning that is fundamental to any style of hero.

In the same way in Nothing but Trouble — another cult classic I will use to make my case — Chevy Chase deals with psychodynamic material and enacts a “dragon slaying” by risking his life to rescue Demi Moore from a giant chopping machine. But, also similarly, this results in the opening up of another level, requiring a completely different — indeed, opposite — response. In Nothing But Trouble, the ending shows the town, after all — not the least affected by the heroic rescue and escape occurring earlier in the movie — sinking into a pervasive and inferno-like underground. The pervasive fire below the earth has much in common with a volcano. In both movies, there is this element of consuming fire that is used to symbolize pain, suffering, and evil that is all-encompassing, comprehensive, and thus unable to be defeated in any normal way, and certainly not by single individuals or small groups of them.

This New Hero, this Necessary Hero, Risks Losing the Rewards of Normality

First Anima, Then Community

I want to point out that Joe Versus the Volcano shows Joe, earlier on, going through all the major stages of the normal hero’s cycle — the retreat from mundane reality, the sailing off into a new and exotic realm of existence and adventure. Here we are still aligned with elements of the hero’s journey that Campbell has detailed. It is a typical story of a rite of passage — one that, if all had gone according to the patriarchy, would have had Joe being initiated into a societal role, which would be given by that patriarchy.

The plot even includes a typical “dragon slaying” — that is, the hero’s conquering of inner fears and risking of his life for another…

suffering masses and their incessant labors feed the displays, vanities, and artifices of the wealthy of any society — those who are not engaged in the actual struggle of humanity, but who, from their Olympian peaks, seek to manipulate and manage it at a distance and without “getting their hands dirty.”

The Perinatal Matrix of Civilization

Floundering in futility himself, indeed, the main character in Brazil, Sam Lowry, who is played by actor, Jonathan Pryce, cannot face the horror of it all, ultimately. He flips out at the end into a reassuring dream sequence bubbling with perinatal imagery. All aspects of the templates on our life experience that are imprinted into our fresh and receptive psyches in the course of our earliest experiences in the womb and at birth itself — as laid out by Stanislav Grof in his Basic Perinatal Matrices — are there.1

By “flipping out” I mean that the “hero” — shackled himself by his perinatal within and his societal oppression without — cannot be effective in his life; he is stymied at every turn. So in fantasy, Sam acts…

…which one rationalizes the results as being worthwhile. One’s life is a ritual; it is unlived and unfelt, and one weighs the resulting despair against an imagined life, where all dreams come true ... much like fairy tales console children and religion tranquilizes adults.

Finally, the fact that this is all a consequence of the fear of perinatal elements is reflected in the infant/baby faces pulling the caged matriarchal symbol.

Another provocative aspect of this image, in the film, has to do with the fact of these hordes of infant-like city dwellers, who are depicted as impoverished and oppressed, and so enslaved. This indicates how these are suffering masses ... and that these bent- backed and huddled, laboring people are really just needy babies inside, driven by leftovers from their perinatal pasts. And again, the hero, in keeping with the Perseus way, is not on the ground with them (as in experiential therapy, the individual would actually be allowing the pains of birth to arise); he is not participating in their struggle (as the Tao of Funny God would have its hero doing); indeed, their suffering feeds his fake and artificial flight, just as the suffering masses and their incessant labors feed the displays, vanities, and artifices of the wealthy of any society — those who are not engaged in the actual struggle of humanity, but who, from their Olympian peaks, seek to manipulate and manage it at a distance and without “getting their hands dirty.”

…confronted, let alone “killed,” because it is affecting one second- handedly, the first and sometimes only response that one can make that is transcendent and is counter to the negative cycle of violence is to simply not participate. If one cannot be part of the solution, one can at least step outside of the arena where one is part of the problem. In showing such a running away from evil as being transcendent, creative, and even Divine, Robbins does in his novel what is being done, in a “right-handed” way, by the movie, Joe Versus the Volcano. For it is all about flipping the script from the one we know, whose ending is clearly evil. We at least have a chance that way.

The anima “damsel” here in the film, tellingly, is trapped in a barred cage which floats in the air, much like women in a patriarchy are put on a pedestal while at the same time being held in bondage. And this prison cell has strings or ropes dangling from it by which the creatures on the ground pull it through the streets of the metropolis. Pulling artificial dreams and distorted images of the feminine and of spirituality, the peons of modern civilization — enslaved by their brutal birth traumas within and crushing economic oppression without — move their bedraggled forms forward through the anonymous and unwelcoming maze of the polluted urban landscape.

Thus, with matriarchy in a cage, with the anima and the feeling self enslaved in the patriarchy, the only response for the hero, like the Pegasus erupting out of the stump of the Medusa, is to engage in an imagined life. In this substitute patriarchal fantasy, the hero does, actually, at a point later on in the movie, have a confrontation and fight to the death with a “dragon” — in this case, a giant, metallic, heavily armored Asian warrior figure. Sure enough the result is futile, showing an actual inability to do anything about the enslaved self and its feelings. So, the hero is not free, cannot free anyone else, is not able to do anything but engage in pyrrhic victories and struggles in…

Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it, often suffering severe consequences of jail time, approbation, and worse? Is it more cowardly to lay one’s body on the gears of the infernal machine, as Mario Savio saw it?2 Or is it actually more cowardly to refuse to stand up for life, become an obedient soldier, and go along with the patriarchy, receiving all kinds of applause and reward for obeying it in the process and for the rest of one’s life?

At any rate, Tom Robbins, in his novel, opens the door to a new way of understanding heroism and cowardice — one which, as well, is most relevant to our current multicultural times. He shows that a true heroic approach is one that dares to do what no one has ever done: change the prevailing pattern, buck tradition, create a new cultural form — one more in line with reason, life, peace, love, and freedom from unnecessary suffering and brutality. In that, he may have been inspired by the Yippies and Abbie Hoffman during the Vietnam War. Robbins shows the “left hand” of the Tao of Funny God, if you will. That is, that it is certainly transcendent and powerful to confront evil and to not be caught up in it and to exemplify a loving, creative, and peaceful response.

But in the case of a war, when it comes to an evil (such as societal pressure to become a soldier and to kill) that cannot be…

…pattern of a man’s life, men seek to unite with their feminine sides, their animas, externally and unsuccessfully, through marriage. This caged angelic figure in the film, Brazil, is a perfect representation of the imprisoned feelings, pleasures, joie de vivre, emotions, spirituality, compassion, sexuality, nurturing qualities, relationship yearnings, and more, which is the anima for a man.

It is significant that this anima in Brazil, caged as it is, contrasts with the anima in Joe Versus the Volcano, who is not only free, but in her final “incarnation” as Patricia is quite outspoken as well, indicating her wholeness of personality, more specifically, the fact that she has integrated her animus, that is to say, her masculine side. These differences in the anima characters of the two films say a lot in revealing their contrasting messages.

The anima is related to a man’s mother, in that its characteristics are fashioned through a boy’s relationship to his mother in early life. As I will explain in a little bit, the anima is also related to and expressive of the Divine Feminine — the Goddess or the matriarchy.

The anima “damsel” here in the film, tellingly, is trapped in a barred cage which floats in the air, much like women in a patriarchy are put on a pedestal while at the same time being held in bondage.

Whereas, I contend it is good thing. This accessibility of cultural ideas, other than those that one was born into, has profound implications for a postmodern multicultural world — one whose mixing of cultural ideas is increased exponentially through the catalyst of the internet. I believe those implications are hopeful and wonderful and that they set the stage for a better way and an alternative path for a humanity currently heading for an abyss.

Indeed, in Robbins’s novel, the ruler, Alobar, does something revolutionary: He runs away; effectively saying “to hell with this bullshit!” This can be seen as parallel to the draft “dodgers” during the Vietnam War in America. They were roundly criticized for being cowardly; and certainly there was self-interest involved in what they did. Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? Matriarchy in a Cage

What is even more provocative and telling is that these perinatal hordes are pulling along behind themselves, using ropes, an enslaved damsel. Specifically, it is an angelic version of a female figure who will later show up again in real life and become the hero’s girlfriend, Jill Layton (played by Kim Greist). You cannot have a clearer depiction of an anima figure as this damsel in a cage.

The anima, according to Jungian psychology, is a male’s repressed feminine side, who “haunts” him throughout life, unless those feminine qualities are embraced within him and integrated into the personality. We saw an excellent depiction of it in the Patricia character in Joe Versus the Volcano; most revealing was the way Patricia, played by Meg Ryan, showed up earlier in the movie as two other women, with whom Joe was romantically involved. The three characters had distinctively different personalities but were all played by Meg Ryan, such that we understand why Joe, in the scene at the volcano, would tell Patricia, “The first time I saw you. I felt like I'd seen you before.”

Thus, a man’s anima, repressed as it is, is projected onto the world, and men see its elements in other women. In the typical…

Risking It All in Running Away

The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything. The story depicts the hero, Alobar, refusing to go along with the cultural mandates of his society, seen clearly as ridiculous and harmful, especially to him. This is wrongness, all pervasive, for the cultural mindset contains not a shred of an alternative. He, indeed, is a king who, according to tradition, is supposed to kill himself at a certain time. No king has ever before refused this regicide. No one in that culture has ever really considered one could.

This situation is not unlike many cultures today and is certainly the mindset of those living in the societies of earlier times. Anthropologists readily observe that the lesser the contact any society and culture has with other ones, the lesser those people living within it know of alternatives to the tenets of their own culture. And the lesser people know of alternatives to anything, including the cultural views of one’s society, the less they are able to conceive options in the decisions of one’s life. This is often seen as a bad thing by scholars in the social sciences, as people in such a situation are said to be losing their cultural or national identity and are depicted as…

In such situations, the battlefield inside oneself must be walked away from. It does little good if one makes good therapeutic progress in self-esteem when the fate of all life is in the balance. What does it matter if one is fearful or anxious ... why put effort into changing it ... when we are in a situation and in a society where that is warranted ... and even saner than being unmoved and complacent about it? Similarly, while confronting the evils of the world one must make an inner surrender of the competition on that worldly level in hopes of raising the entire conflict to another dimension on the inner plane.

…outs are only mollification for the unhappy decisions one has made in one’s life.

Indeed, the hero’s dream depictions of the winged warrior hint at that in being reminiscent of the myth of Icarus, who had artificial wings pasted upon him, which caused him to travel too close to the sun and away from Earth (too far away from reality?) and therefore, the wax adhesive on his wings melting from the sun (the natural consequence of a solar theology), they fall off, resulting in an ignoble plunging to Earth and to death.

Furthermore, the hero’s dreams point to their roots and solution in that in the streets of the city, through whose canyon walls between skyscrapers the hero flies, are seen shackled and regimented hordes of figures with the faces of babies and infants. This is provocative in that it shows the perinatal origins of it all ... that is, its genesis in birth and infancy traumas.

But what may seem to work at the second-line or psychodynamic level — the conquering or slaying of negative feelings ... and notice that I said “seem” — has no place at all at the perinatal ... or, in the case of the world, at the actual. For here, in terms of one’s feelings, the pain energy is overwhelming and pervasive, more than can be dealt with analytically or using one’s intelligence and reason. Similarly, in the outer world, the reality of the situation is too overwhelming and pervasive to be dealt with by piecemeal or “boy scout” approaches. It is also too intense and emotion churning to be dealt with as if it is just another problem to be solved that is on one’s todo list.

Thus the difference between engagement at the psychodynamic versus the perinatal is analogous to that between facing the energy of a dragon and facing that of a volcano. In the outer world, similarly, the evil, like a volcano, is seen to be all-pervasive and intractable. It does not suffice voting out a low-level authority or removing a corrupt official or police officer acting as a tyrant, when the structures of societies throughout the world embody a model of humanity containing a hierarchy with each level below subservient to the one above and the ones at the very top needing to keep everyone below enslaved lest they are ousted from their position at the apex. In such a situation evil cannot be vanquished, if it ever could. Similarly,..
